lot of time at the bottom of
B.C.’s lakes. And this week the
B.C. Environment employee
can be seen under the waves of
Champion Lake.

“It’s a part of our push to
control Eurasian Water Mil-
foil,” she said.

“It’s an aquatic weed that
grows profusely and is quite
prevalent in the Kootenays.”

McCullough added that
milfoil is not only a nuisance
to water enthusiasts, but can
slowly choke marine life.

“Milfoil can grow up to 10
centimetres a day in ideal con-
ditions, so if we weren't ac-
tively pursuing the problem
we probably wouldn’t be able
to enjoy Champion Lake by
now.”

McCullough and her co-
workers will be scuba diving
in Champion Lake, laying a
“bottom barrier” until Friday.

“A bottom barrier is a geo-
textile that we put down over
the root plants. It decreases
the light available to the mil-
foil and controls it quite effec-
tively.”

McCullough said that local
residents can help prevent the
spread of milfoil by keeping
boating equipment weed-free
and by cleaning beach areas of
weeds before they take root.

“It’s quite a big problem and
should be treated seriously.”
