Every year North Americans
spend over a billion dollars on
unproven therapies, many
involving diet manipulation to
escape the pain associated with
arthritis. The possible link
between arthritis and dict was
rejected by most doctors for
years. Now researchers have

Seriously begun to investigate
this relationship. The various
theories being explored can be
divided into two groups. One,
the idea that removing some
thing from the diet may prevent
arthritis or relieve the symptoms
and the other that supplementing
the diet can do the same

Studies using elimination/chal
lenge diets have been used to test
the first theory. These diets
involve fasting for a number of
days, followed by a restrictive
diet and a gradual introduction of
certain foods. So far, the results
have not been consistent from
one person to another. They
have also shown that arthritis
symptoms are very seldom (pos
sibly only 5 per cent) due to an
allergic reaction.

Alternative therapies that
involve taking dietary supple
ments such as vitamins, miner
als, cod liver oil, kelp, evening
Primrose oil, devils claw, yucca,
ginseng, and New Zealand green
lipped mussel have been investi
gated. None of these substances
when taken under normal cir
cumstances, has produced con
sistent results. In fact, some
vitamin and mineral supplemen
tation may not be advisable
because they interfere with some
arthritis drug therapies.

Some promising results hav
occurred when looking at a fatty
acid intake and inflammation
The omega-3 fatty acids found
in.some cold water fish oils and
seeds seem to lessen the intlam
matory response. The omega-6
fatty acids
meal, poultry milk and
diary products are metabolized
into highly inflammatory chem:
cals. Thus a relationship of diet
to inflammation has been made
But there are still hundreds of
unknown questions. What bal
ance of these fatty acids in our
system provide the best response
and what people will benefit
from these results, are just a few

Researchers know that arthritis
has many forms and each individ
ual responds differently top teat-
ment. To see if altering your fatry
acid intake will help reduce
inflammation, you can try the fol
lowing tips:

+ Reduce total fat intake. Use
fats high in omega-3 fatty acids
such as rapeseed (Canola), Soy
bean or flaxseed (linseed). Elimi-
nate animal fats such as butter
lard, cream, meat fat, bacon or
meat drippings.

* Include fish of all kinds espe
cially salmon, tuna, trout, macker.
el and related species a minimum
3 to 4 times per week.

+ Increase your intake of dried
peas, beans and lentils while
reducing your intake of all meats
and poultry.

+ Use low fat dairy products
such as skim milk, low fat yogurt,
low fat (under 20 per cent B.F)

+ Limit your intake of eggs to
three to four per week

Dear Ann Landers
months ago, you printed a letter
from my mother, who signed her
self, “Heartbroken in Texas." She
told what it was like to have her
son falsely accused of rape. You
might be interested in how things
turned out

Just before the case was to go
to trial, all charges were dropped

Prosecutors found conclusive
evidence that the woman was
lying. So after 14 months of a liv
ing hell and nearly $20,000 in
legal fees, my nerve-racking
ordeal is over.

I consider myself luc ky. Unlike
most men falsely accused of rape,
I was fortunate enough to have
proof that the woman was lying 1
hired an attorney, and we filed
hefty lawsuits against the woman
and the police department that
investigated her claim. My night
mare is over, but hers is just
beginning

The frightening thing about all
this is how easy it was for her to
get me arrested, charged and
indicted by a grand jury. | was
only one more bad break away
from prison. I now know that if a
woman is a halfway decent liar,
she can destroy a man’s life

ing. Once upon a time, authorities
greeted |

Claims of date rape with skepti
cism. Now they blindly believe
almost any claim
improbable

I have no doubt that at this
moment, there are many men in

are as innocent as I am. My heart
goes out to all of them
