Modern Fijians are skilled sailors and boatmen, adept at navigating among the numerous reefs that surround so many islands. Today, they use elon. gated fiberglass punts with small, portable outboard motors. As peace keepers, in the Sinai and Lebanon, their reputation rivals that of our Canadians with the UN forces. While living in the Fiji Islands, we had a favorite island resort to which we would flee often for weekends. I would sail out from Lautoka on Friday moming on the “Tui Tai”, a 140 foot tri-masted steel schooner, ably crewed by Fijians in their distinctively pat- terned. sulus. Once the red (fading to pink) sails were set, the crew would happily strum their guitars and sing requeSts, or teach Fijian songs to those of us who were interested. It would take close to two hours to reach the island, depending on wind and sea. “Turaga” would RIPTI October 5 November 9 December 14 January 11 February 8 N“APPLI Michael Kim Guitarar Latina Foothills Brass The Bissets ‘The Challenge’ March 1 Penderecki March 22 ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ Adult $55.00; Student $45. 00; Senior $45. 5 years of age, or ATION PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY. We would circumnavigate the island, stopping to select favorite shells and watch more energetic tourists para-sailing or water-ski- ing. Snorkeling was great on the reef, just steps off the main beach. Once, my sister and I were dropped off on a reef a few kilo- meters away and were left to col- lect shells. However, after an hour in the unrelenting sun, were happy to see Jone, the boatman, arriving to take us, laden with shells, back to the resort There was a small lagoon where we could windsurf, and lively miniature golf course. The same Fijians with whom you played vol- leyball on the beach, or went fish- ing off the reef with would appear as members or singers in the band, tending bar, or carving in the bou- tique. There were organized events, such as adventures, skits or learn- ing experiences, as in “How to tie a “serve a mango”, or “cook Dinners were always festive, with delicious fresh seafood and seemed to flee. All too soon it would be late Sunday afternoon, time to catch the small freighter, the “Bulamakau™ back to Lautoka. One Sunday afternoon, the sky darkened, the wind came up and the swells rose. By the time the Bulamakau dove into the lagoon, there was a good sea running, The boat crew was murmuring among themselves as they ferried boat loads of passengers out to the anchored ship. We moved forward in line, shoes in hand, as we waded out into the surf to climb aboard the punt. Off we went, tossing and bouncing over the waves as the crew skillfully brought us alongside the ship. Now we could see that the transport of people from tossing punt to heaving ship was taking great skill. As the sea roughened, the crew began manhandling passengers up onto the deck, but, in so doing, lost his balance. He twisted, recovered, and then made a loop- ing graceful dive into the rolling sea! We all cheered, then went silent as he did not reappear. Now we were all concerned that he would surface, only to be dashed to bits between the two craft, or be caught in the pro. pellers. He bobbed up at a safe dis tance, a happy grin on his face as he waved to indicate he was okay. There was much boisterous chatter as the rest of the crew were giving him a difficult time over the inci- dent. They told him, good natured- ly, what a poor crewman he was, to almost let that poor woman fall into the sea. Jone caught my eye and grinned at me. He said “That was close! We haven't lost one yet!” The Bulamakau rolled and corkscrewed all the way back to the main island. Many passengers were seasick, so that we were indeed very grateful to arrive safely back at Lautoka wharf. Happily, by the next time we went out to the island, we had forgotten the whole incident.
