Putting in a sewerage system at this time is opportune. While it is greatly needed, it will give employ- ment to a considerable number of the unemployed at fair wages. Now is the time to push public improvements. _——r The chances are that within one year Roseland will be treating her own ores. When that time comes there will be no mining camp in the world with fairer prospects. There isnoend to the gold rock in this camp, and as low grade as is successfully worked in other districts need not be counted upon. ———— Business men may come and go, but Roseland will not falter so longas the ore output is increasing and there seems to be no probability of it being other- wise. Altheugh work has been stopped on quite a few of the principal proper- ties, it is not their fault, as in nearly every instance development work has improved them. It takes more money to make a mine here than has been cal- culated upon, R. T. Lowery, editor and ‘‘financier” of the New Denver Ledge, is eccentric or he is nothing. Itis probably not just right to say that, forhe makes consid- erable pretentions of beingawit. How- ever, he has greatly improved the Ledge, until it is second to no weekly paper in the Kootenays. “R. T. Low- ery” is rather prominent in the head— of his paper, but it is a failing of the human race to individually ‘swell up,’ and if a little prominent in the “‘finan- cier’’ of the Ledge, it can be overlooked. ——_.. AN AERIAL VISITOR. Phenomenon That Puzzled Vacouver Islanders Recently. Victoria, B. C., Aug. 4.—An illumin- ated seria! visitor that has been mys- tifyihg the people of the northwest for eeveral months pest made two recent appearances near Victoria. Threeladies camping at Sydney a few nights ago saw it and watched it for half an hour. It uppeared to be moving slowly to the north, One lady described it as a red column of fire, apparently fifty feet long. Last Sunday morning about 2 o’clock it was seen by Messrs. Taitum, Young and Wolfendeen, who were camped near Goldstream. It worked in a north- westerly direction. The three men watched until davlight, when it disap- ps |. It was shaped like a balloon, at its light was more brilliant than it would be possible to light a balloon. The light was the color of an_ electric light and the object was steady in throw- It was appear to be a visitor from the skies. was not affected by the wind. —— SILVER GOING LOWER. Experienced the Most Violent Break in the Years’ Decline. New York, Aug. 5.—Silver bullion ex- perienced today the most violent break of the season’s decline. In London the price dropped a half penny per ounce from yest rday’s price, selling at 253, pence per ounce, as against 2714 pence a month ago. New York price fell to 551¢ bid, a break of 114 cents an ounce from yesterday and 14 cents a month. At these prices the bullion value of a silver dollar is a trifle more shan 43 cente. London despatches ascribed today’s great weakness in silver to liquidation by New York holders of the bullion. Such a decline as today’s has not been witnessed since June, 1893. The Indian mints were closed to free silver coinage June 26 of that year.” On the news bul- lion fell in London from 37!¢ pence per ounce to a price below 30, but it rali sharply later. minent New York excl‘ange howed today received this cable from abroad: ‘‘No market. Name price at which you will sell.” This message came in responge to a request asking London quotations. —— KLONDIKE BILL OF FARE. 00 F Elk-Tajl Soup, Mink Pot Pie and Baked an Mule, A sample bill of fare of a Klondike restaurant reads something like this: “Elk-tail soup $1.50, mink pot-pie $1, beaver fricassee $2.50, fresh bear steak $2.” Before some of those who are rushing headlong into that country get back it is likely they will have a bill of fare to choose from which is even scan- dinner of the Lewis and Clark expedi- tion to the great ouknows Northwest tier than the one of a certain Christmas| ¢ ROSSLAND STOCK QUOTATIONS.
