Deedat, in Edmonton for a series of lectures, said Chris- tians should not dispense with the Bible's prescriptions for daily life on the grounds that Jesus made obedience a purely spiritual role. He draws on similarities between Arabic and Hebrew and on the common eastern traditions of Jew and Muslim to bolster his arguments. How could I possibly forget such a humbling, embarrassing ex- perience? Our church youth group was on our Spring Retreat in the wild woods of Michigan. Our leaders :gathered us to- gether, then: split us into groups of seven, putting -blindfolds on each of us. We all held hands and were: led on a walk through the woods by our “seeing-eye”. leader. ‘No one -was allowed to speak, so the only sound we heard was the crackling of leaves and twigs under our feet and an occasional grunt when. someone stumbled: I was at the head of our small band, trying cautiously to feel my way, hoping .our leader didn't have a warped sense of humor, - If there was a log in the way or a branch hanging down, my leader would show me without speaking, only by touch, and I had to pass it on to the others, Needless to say, the grunts and. groans. behind me were quite loud at t, . I soon began to see our journey as a picture of being a leader in life — a spiritual leader. Jesus Christ can see clearly what lies ahead on the path of life. He in turn guides the leader who can’t see, but senses these. obstacles which.; might. cause others to. stum- . ble. How comforting it is to know there is One who sees ahead in life. And it is quite a responsibility for the family or church leader to listen to Him. At one point in our journey my guide let go of my hand. I stood’ puzzled for a few mo- ments, then with a sense of pride I understood what 1 should do.,I was to make my own way leading the others, even though I couldn't see. I felt I had the wisdom and experience to lead the others and soon my. cautious step: became bolder. Finally, I felt a hand grasp mine and we. continued on as before. When we returned to the cabin I related my deep insights and spiritual lessons and thanked my leader for letting me lead. .. “Tom,” he- said, “I hate to tell you this, but I didn't let you lead; I only let go of your hand to clear away a blocked part of the path, and when I turned around I saw you were about to lead everyone over a cliff. I grabbed you just before you stepped into space.” My ego was deflated. My insights turned to dust. Then I realized how much like life my experience was, Often we feel that we don’t need God to tell us what to do. We say to 1 “God | MR. AND MARS.
