Transport Canada officials say no
one was at fault in the March 29 mid-air
plane crash near Trail which killed an
instructor and student from the
Castlegar Flying School.

But two months later officials are
stil] puzzled as to how the two aircraft
could have collided on a clear, sunny
day with few clouds.

“It's pretty difficult to come up with
a conclusive answer,” said Syl Dzus of
Transport Canada said Tuesday in an
interview. Dzus took part in the
investigation of the crash, which oc-
curred two kilometres north of Trail.

“Neither saw the other until it was
too late to do anything,” said Dzus.
“It was a case of see or be seen.”

Instructor Michel Camille Devaux,
36, of Castlegar, and student Curt
Richard McDonell, 19, both of the
Castlegar Flying School operated out
of Selkirk College, were killed immedi-
ately after their Cessna Skyhawk col-
lided with a Cessna 150 flown by David
Ralph McMillan, 26, of Salmo. Mc-
Millan returned to Castlegar with light
damage to his airplane.

Dzus said McMillan had completed a
turn, and was flying towards Castlegar

Skyhawk was still attached when it fell
over 1,000 metres to the earth, “both
wings were on the same side (of the
airplane) when we found it,” said Dzus.

It's possible that those in the aircraft
that crashed had the sun in their eyes
because they were flying north in the
direction of the sun, added Dzus.

‘They “obviously didn't have time to
take evasive action,” he said.

McMillan got his pilot's license in
April 1982, and had no previous record
of aircraft accidents, said Dzus. Me-
Millan was working towards obtaining
a commercial pilot's licence at the time
of the crash.

Both aircraft were on trainin,
