Calderbank Canadian Olympic swimmer Victor Davis was a hit this weekend at the B.C. Summer Swimming Association championships at Trail. He. was applauded at every public appearance he made during his three-day stay in the area. Davis presided at the openinig ceremonies Friday afternoon of the swimming championships. He also gave a coaches and a swimmers clinics. The swimmer was also the guest speaker at a banquet put on by the BCSSA and the Trail Kiwanis Club Friday night at the Cominco gym. Davis told over 200 guests — mostly swimmers and parents — that he was “really over at the Davis a hit at championships_ tan because_you're training outside.” “I never get bored swimming in the summer,” Davis _ said. = “But in the wintertime it’s a little hard. You always have to keep your goals focussed: You have to remember exactly what you're going for . . . he told the swimmers. Another question asked of Davis was how he psychs himself in swimming. “I don’t really get psyched up — I just feel good,” Davis replied. “Basically whatever happens happens. It's really not a matter of getting psyched up, it’s a matter of just feeling good and strong.” -One questioner asked Davis if he plans to go compete in the next Olympics (1988 in Seoul, South Korea) — a reception he seems to get when he makes appearances such as the ones in Trail. . “It really feels good,” he said. “It makes me feel that I'm actually back at the Olympics again when I'm standing on the podium and getting a gold medal and they say your name . . . they're all cheering, there's 12,000 “people . . . and they're screamin . that’s really something.” __— The 21-year- -old | Waterloo, Ont., resident won a gold medal in the 200-metre breasstroke and silvers in the 100 metres and the 4x100 metre medley relay at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. After Davis's brief speech, guests had a schanes to field questions to him When asked ifhe followed any kind of supplemental ight-trai: Davis answered that in ‘about 1B days he will be back into training. “That includes a lot of running, soccer, weights and very little swimming . .. “between three and four times a week.” About 10 days from that he said he will get more and more away from the land and more into the pool. He said this year especially, there. will be-a-lot of. weights involved “because I'm going to need the strength to go as fast as I can in the world championships . . .” When asked about a nutritional program Davis replied: “Ya, I eat as muchas I can,” to which the audience responded with laughter. One young swimmer asked Davis if he ever gets bored of swimming. Davis said being in a three-month program as most of the swimmers at the championships are, “it’s very tough to get bored because it's summer and the spirits are high and it’s sunny outside and you're getting a great Cundy of the Aquanauts was seventh in the boys Division 2 100 Indi Castlegar's Wendy Pilla won a gold medal and es- _ satisfi 4 “So there is that reason to go-on-—=and that's to get question that he has been asked a lot. “There is good reason for me to want #6 go there because I only won one gold medal at the-Olympic Games where I went there to win two and I'm still not satisfied with my performance,” he said. “I'm happy but still not the 100-metre breasstroke.” “Tl decide next year after the world champion- ships,” Davis said. Davis was also asked if he had any interest in water polo. | ae “It’s too hard,” he replied. ae One person asked Davis for a description of the type of commitment it takes. to become a top-ranked competitor like himself. “If I say that then a lot of kids might not want to do ” he said. “But then there's a lot of benefits — like this right now — standing up in front of 250 people .. . talking about your experiences and sharing them.” “It’s basically five hours a days, six days a week,” he said. He added that when one does make that type of commitment, swimming comes first. " + “My coach-has said from day one, swimming comes. first and everything else comes second,” “And I believe 100 per cent in that,” he said. Another. highlight” of Davis’ visit to the West Kootenay — his first —was a 50-metre freestyle race with seven other swimmers — winners of a raffle. In the race, Jim Christian, coach -of-the Colville Valley Swim Club — the only U.S. team entered in the championships — beat Davis in the race. Asked how he felt about his win, Christian replied: “7 would have felt better if I would’ have beat him in the breaststroke.” Pilla sets B.C. record boys Division 6 200 IM with a time of 2:28.23.
