Union members in the Trail, Castlegar and Nelson operations have been on a legal strike since August 13, 1985 over this remaining issue. The board did approve wage increase proposal subject to the | union’s withdrawal of their demands for a union shop (closed shop), but this has been turned down by the IBEW members. Shaw Cable holds to their belief that all employees should have the right to choose whether or not they wish to belong to a union. Curren- tly, under the federal government's “Rand Formula” non-union bargaining unit employees pay union dues, whether they join the union or not. The term “union shop” can be misunderstood, Shaw Cable would like to make it clear that we are not opposed to working with IBEW 1003, as demonstrated in the past, but a “union shop” provision where em- ployees are given no choice but to join the union as a condition of em- ployment is unacceptable to our company and remains the outstanding issue in this dispute. SHAW CABLE SYSTEMS B.C. LTD. and Gordon” Pulpit & Pew By GEORGE JAMES Calvary Baptist Church This article is copied from The Chart and Compass, edited by Pastor Bert Ache- son of Toronto. —-THE SOURCE OF TRUE RELIGION “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as - erystal, proceeding out of the throne: of God and of the Lamb.” Rev. 22:1 Christianity has been in the world for almost 2,000 years, ‘yet the majority of people today do not know what constitutes a true Christian. It is an accepted fact that water is always purest at its source, but as it winds its way down through the val- leys and swamps it can be- come so contaiminated and polluted that it is unfit for human consumption. So it is with Christianity. We must go back to its source in the Book of Acts in “the Bible and then we will have no trouble understand- ing what a true Christian really is. : Acts 11:26 says: “The dis- ciples were first called Chris- tians in Antioch.” What is a disciple? A dis- ciple is an individual who has come to Jesus Christ in faith and d Him down to us by our respective denominations. Christ is the source of the pure river of the water of life. No religion or cult or den- or human being into their heart as Savior and made Him the Lord and Mas- ter of their life, disciplining their. conduct according to the teaching of His word in the Bible. Disciple means “disciplined one.” These disciples were called “Christians” and Christian means one who personally belongs to Christ by an act of faith in Him. Now let us sum it all up. An individual who accepts Christ as their Savior by faith, and disciplines their life according to His example and teaching is a Christian. As Christianity came down through the centuries it be- came polluted. as it passed through the valleys and swamps of human philoso- phies and traditions. Now we must watch that our Christianity is not just an has-been given the right to dispense salvation. Every person who will be a true Christian must come to ° Christ, the source, personally and confess their sin to Him; repent and believe in Him alone for salvation. Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must st be saved.” Gift campaign underway By CasNews Staff The Canadian Mental Health Association is con- ducting its annual Gift of Hope campaign again this year: This year in B.C., the cam: paign is attempting to pro- vide Christmas gifts for each of the approximately 6,000 patients in psychiatric facil- ities in B.C. The Trail branch of the CMHA provides gifts in the scarves, slippers or lingerie. The CMHA asks in a news release that the gifts be new and unwrapped, as nursing staff prefer to choose the right gift for the right per- son. “Each gift is-an expression of caring, a thoughtful ges- ture which helps very much in. the rehabilitation of a mentally-ill person,” the re- lease says. Boxes marked Gift of Hope outward religious traditions handed Brisco to talk employment in Salmo Kootenay West MP Bob Brisco:will spend Monday in the Village of Salmo, meeting with constituents and the local business community. Brisco will address the Salmo Chamber of Commerce focusing on jobs, and what the community can do to im- prove its. employment pic- ture. “Salmo is an area which seems to have a chronic un- - employment problem,”. said Brisco in a prepared release. “But with proper guidance and assistance, it, is a_com- munity that can flourish. I am confident about that.”- ~~ Brisco will be devoting part of his speech to famili- arizing Salmo residents and businesses with the new Canadian Jobs Strategy. As well, Jack Roddis of the Canada Employment Centre in Nelson will be present to answer specific questions about the program. * The Salmo.
