He had worked with his hands all his life, and while a mild bout of angina had forced him to take early retire- ment years earlier, he still saw himself as robust, rugged and invulnerable. So out he went that slushy day — only this time, he cut short his work, came back in the house, took off his boots and coat, silently went back to bed and died. A heart attack, brought on by shovelling. Nearly a year later, in the hope it may save a life — someone you love, perhaps even you — I write this column about this most underestimated of winter's dangers. o 8 * Even if he had no calendar, Dr. Lyall Higginson could tell what time of year it is. Right about now, with the cold weather settling in and the first snowfalls summoning the shovels from the garages, the Ottawa cardiologist starts noticing an upswing in the number of heart attacks and chest pains he treats. “It's the same every year,” he says. “The cold temperature alone can narrow your arteries and force your heart to work much harder — people can die walking against the wind. But shoveling snow can be lethal and so few people know it.” No one should even claim that exercise is risk-free. Studies have shown that among sedentary men, the risk of heart attack increases nearly 50-fold when they're taking part in vigorous exercise. Even among men who work out frequently, the risk of heart attack during exercise increases roughly five times. Of course, before you decide that fitness isn’t for you, keep in mind that men who frequently exercise have only 40 per cent as many heart attacks as do sedentary men. shovelling ‘The expert conclusion: you're at greater risk of heart attack when you're exercising, but regular exercise results in much better overall protection for your heart. Whether you pursue fitness or not, the same rules apply when you shovel snow — the better shape you are in, the less risky it is. The biggest problem, Higginson says, is that “people don’t realize that it's a major form of exercise and should be respected.” Apart from the complications cold weather brings, many shovel after a big meal or a couple of drinks, compounding the challenge. And they don’t just shovel — Institute. HAS ADVICE . “For our patients, I have simple advice: don't shovel,” Higginson says. “If you don't have heart disease, it is probably no more dangerous than any other vigorous exercise. The problem is: how do you know if you have heart disease?” Chiropractors advise you to bend your knees and avoid sudden and off-balance movement when lifting and throwing snow. Higginson says there are other exercise is worth i for Mi go slowly if you've not done it much lately, warming up gradually and tapering off toward the end. “It sometimes means taking two hours to clear your walk, but you shouldn't rush.” Many communities have laws that force you to shovel soon after a snowfall, and while some places offer free shovelling for shut-ins, people with frequent chest pains or heart troubles often find themselves without such assistance. i leaves a message: “If you know your neighbor has a problem, the first snowfall of the year is the time to start offering help.” HOMEGOODS FURNITURE: WAREHOUSE Tues,-Sat., 9:30-5:30 Chino Creek PAINTING & DECORATING ghe9 FOURTH AVENUE an ec Oar 365-3863 Gary Flemi Dianna Kootnikott ADVERTISING SALES OFFICE 266-5210 tinuing operations was $3.01 billion, up from $2.8 billion in the same period last year.
