June 12, 1988 a A BUSINESS SPECIAL TREES . . . Fred Marshall, Forestry instructor at Selkirk College, plants blister-rust resistant white pine seedling on Castlegar campus. College gets pine seedlings As a result of the White Pine Symposium held last month in Nakusp, Selkirk College has acquired an apparently geneti cally resistant strain of white pine seedlings that will be reared on college grounds, and may eventually lead to the prop agation of more of the blister rust resistant trees. The symposium, sponsored by Westar Timber, the Canadian Forest Service and the Ministry of Forests and Lands, brought together 160 foresters, loggers, educators, researchers, and gov. ernment officials to evaluate the progress achieved in combatting blister rust, and to evolve strat. egies for the long range re duction of this fungal rust that spreads rapidly and quickly kills white pine. Selkirk College Forestry in structor Fred Marshall attended the seminar and was able to acquire 50 blister rust resistant seedlings, donated to the college by Crown Forest Industries of Ladysmith “Genetic selection is seen as the best method of combatting Z the blister rust problem over the long term,” said Marshall. “The seedlings displayed at the symposium came from sev erely infested stands of timber, yet the trees from which the seeds were taken were rust free,” he said The seedlings were reared by Selwyn Jones, of the Sylvan Vale Nursery in Black Creek on Vancouver Island. Marshall has __ interplanted these rust resistant white pine on college ground along with Douglas fir and larch seedlings planted earlier this spring by Wildland Recreation students “It will be eight or 10 years before any seeds become avail able from these trees,” said Marshall. Propagating genetically resis. tant stands is the long-range approach to combatting the blister rust problem, but ex perts, sharing information at the symposium, indicate that early pruning of the lower branches on young white pine can slow the spread of the fungus which enters lower juvenile needles. Renewed interest in silver mine Renewed interest in the Treasure Mountain Silver area between Hope and Princeton will spark almost $1 million in new exploration this year. Recent work in the area by Harrisburg-Dayton Resource Corp. and Huldra Silver Inc. has uncovered significant silver, lead and zine mineralization, the companies said in a prepared release. A joint venture between Harris. burg-Dayton and Schellex Gold Corp. will invest a minimum of $200,000 this year to explore the Summit Camp Property, where 1987 sample assays showed 88 oz. of silver and .059 0z. of gold per ton, with work to commence June 15. Harrisburg-Dayton acquired the option last year and did a significant amount of work on the Southern No. 8 claim. The 1987 exploration pro- gram indicated a mineralized struc. ture with a minimum 170 metre strike length. A report on the property by ge- ologist Bernard DeWonck, of Bel-Can Geological Services Ltd., recom mended a phased exploration pro- gram — geophysical and geochemical surveys, blasting, trenching and diamond drilling. (Harrisburg-Dayton and Schellex) will be spending a min imum of $200,000 this year on the exploration work in the hopes of sinking an exploratory shaft this fall,” said Schellex president Gary Weekly stocks VANCOUVER (CP) — Prices were moderately active Friday on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. The most impressive proven min eralization to date in the area is on a property being developed by Huldra Silver Inc. Huldra’s Treasure Moun tain Property has indicated reserves to date of 118,000 metric tonnes averaging 32.03 oz. per ton silver, 8.39 per cent lead and 3.51 per cent zinc, with “a strong potential for additional tonnages along strike and depth,” according to an April news release by Huldra president Magnus Bratlien. Last summer a 400-ton surface sample from the high grade “C” vein averaged 100 oz. of silver per ton. Huldra is going ahead with under ground development “They are expected to spend be tween $500,000 and $750,000 this year on underground development, possibly more if they decide to go into production,” Schellenberg said.
