Realistic Mounts at Aasland Museum In November, 1986, Aasland Museum Taxidermy opened its doors in Castlegar under the management of Stephen Davis. The company, owned by Odd Aasland, who originally started in Castlegar in the 1950s and then moved to Cranbrook in 1957, is now the largest taxidermy firm in the Kootenays. The team of Odd Aasland and Stephen Davis specialize in museum quality mounts and hold numerous awards from international and provincial taxidermy competitions. They take pride in producing award- winning recreations of wildlife, giving all their mounts, from fish to birds and small animals to polar bears, a highly realistic appearance. Their mounts range from life-size to full- shoulder mounts. They also repair and restore old mounts and carry spare capes, should you decide to have your antlers mounted. Business here is very encouraging for Stephen. Renovations are underway at the Castlegar showroom, located next to the Monte Carlo Motor Inn, and a new assistant has been hired to help keep up with the demand for the quality work. People are more than welcome to come into the museum and see the displays. mummy (Castlegar... Like what, where, why, who and when. Even Shakespeare would have fun trying to solve this one. Starting back in 1985, Ginette Laturnus opened a small boutique in d Castlegar called Ginet- te’s Creations. The business was based on the sale of hand: fashion j ery, ace ies and a limited amount of clothing, including maternity wear. “French artifacts” as Ginette prefers to call them. A year later she moved the business to Castleaird Plaza and r d it Ginette's B: que, with a much greater inventory of fashion accessories, luggage and the beginning of more ladies wear. The premises became.too “cramped” once again and the following year she moved to a larger location in the Plaza, bringing in a full line of ladies fashions. Per d service, a computerized client list of customer's preferences in styles, colors, sizes etc., ex- tra time spent on phoning customers when new fashions arrived; combined with her strategy of con- tinuously ordering new and different apparel! rather than “bulk” ordering of the same fashions, led to in- creased demand for her fashions and the growth of Nelson area customers. “People just don't like to see themselves walking down the street,” she says, so when space once again became limited, and there seemed to be no way to expand the boutique, she decided to open a second business in Nelson, and “Voila”, Fashion Flair. Now it gets confusing. How do you recommend that people go to two different stores. “Well, it's like this,” according to Laturnus, “Ginette’s Boutique carries some lines, and Fashion Flair in Nelson carries other lines. One store carries some of one line and the other store carries something else in the same line and both stores carry a little of both, but not much. “Right!” In English that means, for example, both Stores carry London Fog apparel but they may not be because it's more than twice as big. So everything that's at Fashion Flair couldn't be displayed at Ginet- te’s Boutique. So if you're looking for a sol to the problem of which store to go to, to see everything these fine stores have to offer, forget it! You'll have to.go.to both.
