014 Wednesday, December 18, 1991 a S chool SPORTS News Staff BAS! Consistency was the key word last weekend as both Stanley Humphries Secondary School’s senior basketball teams played in out-of-town tournaments. On one hand, the senior girls were as consistent as they come going undefeated in three games to win an eight- team tourney in Calgary for the second straight year. The senior boys, on the oth- er hand, were as consistent as aceasefire in Yugoslavia, win- ning two out of three to finish third in an eight-team event in Oliver. Laurel Closkey was an indi- vidual example of consistency on the Rockettes, as she was selected to the tournament all- star team. She was also an all- star in SHSS’s Blue and Gold tournament two weeks ago. Rory Perrier, who had 42 points over the three games, got an all-star nod as well for SHSS. On the boys team, Marcel Dusseault, who hit in double figures in all three games for the Rockers, made the all-star team in Oliver. Laurel Closkey aR Ea asa a Kootenay sweep in the Cal- gary tourney as Cranbrook’s Mount Baker secondary won the 16-team event for schools with larger student popula- tions. j The Rockettes got 21 points from Perrier, 18 from Kelly Davidoff and 13 from Closkey in a 66-22 win over Olds. Alta. in -their first game Friday night. SHSS moved into the final with a 73-64 win over Hanna, Alta. as Closkey led the way with 19 points, while Davidoff had 18 and Perrier had 13. The Rockettes were part of « THIS IS YOUR WARNING John Ritchie — Dawson Creek upset Fernie in the other four-team pool to spoil a rematch of the Blue and Gold final which Fernie won over the Rockettes. The Rockettes beat Dawson Creek 68-49. “They (Dawson Creek) were thrashed (after beating Fer- nie),” said Rockettes coach Jack Closkey. “Although they did give us a tussle for a half, but then after that we just walked away from them.” Davidoff led the way in the final with 18 for the Rockettes, while Closkey had 10 and Per- rier had eight. “The kids played really well as—a-group._Not-everybody. played great every game, but overall the team did very well, we're progressing __ well,” Closkey said. The coach’s assessment on the boys side wasn’t quite as favorable. “Not a bad start for our first tournament,” said John Ritchie, “but they’re so incon- sistent. They show signs of brilliance, but they also show signs of weakness.” ‘The boys beat Spring Valley, who were an honorable men- tion on the top-10 AA boys rankings this month, 87-48. Dusseault canned 23, Dan Kooznetsoff had 19 and Ryan Vatkin had 18 in the win. As good as they played against Spring Valley was about as bad as they played in the late stages of an 82-67 loss to Oliver in their next game, said Ritchie. “With about five minutes left. we were within three points, then it got ugly after that,” he said. Dusseault picked up 19 points in the loss, while Kooznetsoff had 17. The Rockers returned to beat Osoyoos 58-31 in the game for third place: Dusseault again led the way for SHSS with 19 points. Ritchie said his team has all the tools offensively, but lack depth and experience on de- fence. Both senior teams will be action at SHSS Thursday night as their counterparts from J.L Crowe in Trail are in town.
