And according to Castlegar Aquanauts coach Tom Carew, his kids have good reason to be proud. “We did really well,” Carew said of the two-day Colville meet. “We came in second place overall and Colville came in first.” Carew said the he was ex- pecting his club to finish “sec- ond or third” in the event, so the team’s placing didn’t sur- prise him. “What was surprising is how close we'were to Colville,” he said.“We were only 40 points behind them and they had quite a few kids out at the meet.” A first-place finish nets a team nine points, while sec- ond, third and fourth place fin- ishers get seven, six and five points, respectively. Two Castlegar sisters have come away gold medalists from the B.C. Athletics Junior De- velopment Track and Field Tournament over the Aug. 1 weekend. Twelve-year-old Nicolle Binnie and 10- year-old Angela both struck gold at the pres- tigious event, proving once again that this pair is for real. Angela lead the way during the weekend track and field gathering, picking up a gold medal in the shot put with a toss of 6.35 me- tres or some 20 feet, four inches. Angela also collected fifth place showings in the high jump, long jump and the 200 metre dash. She rounded out her impressive show- ing with a seventh in the 100 metre finals. Not to be outdone by her younger sibling, Nicolle added to the medal collection by leav- ing Prince George with a pair of gold medals around her neck. Nicolle struck gold in the 400 metre dash and then anchored her 14- and 15-year-old 4- by-100 relay team to another. And if that wasn’t enough to make the sis- ters smile, Nicolle earned a bronze medal in the 800 metre finale. Nicolle rounded out her impressive show- ing with fourth place finishes in the 100 and 1,500 metre dash and the shot put. She also grabbed a sixth place finish in the 80-metre hurdles — a race she competed in for the first time. Mother Brenda said the top-notch results at the Prince George meet haven't gone unno- ticed. She said strong showings have put Nicolle and Angela in the hunt for Athlete of the Year honors in their respective age categories. Those awards are handed out based on over- all performances in both track and field events. The Prince George haul marks the end of the track season for Castlegar’s dynamic duo, who will spend the off-time adding a new flair to their workout regimes — weightlifting. For that, Nicolle and Angela need to look no further than mom — a bodybuilder. “They had quite a few more relay teams than we did. It would have been pretty hard to beat them.” Carew said that while his whole team was impressive, some of the kids were out- standing. “Selena Fodor had an every weekend.” Also mentioned were Andy Angrignon who was “really psyched” and Adam Rodgers, who beat his goal time of one minute and 20 seconds in the 100 metre breast stroke. “I thought everyone was pretty super. But the Aquanauts aren't the only local kids who did well in the annual event. “We had a wonderful time,” and got 273 points, which is fantastic for us.” Seghers added that six of her kids qualified for the provincial meet by finishing first, second or third in Colville. Another six kids placed in the top six. “We're really looking for- there.” But Seghers said it was hard to say how the Otters would do in the final meet of the year. “Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see,” she said. “It should be worth watching.” KOOTENAY REGIONAL Swim Meet RESu_ts, Aua. 8-9 Division 1 Boys: Adam Kristian - 50 free, 50 fly, 50 breast, 100 free; David Gallo - 50 back, 100 IM (alt), 50 fly (alt).
