Hewitt said he did not want to see Rossland.go to seed and that so far as the objections to advertising the city were concerned they had already been woll answered but he asserted that $50,000 was inadequate for the needs of the city. Albert Dutton, a representutive workman, made a strong speech in support of Colonel Scott. He said with reference to one of the candi- dates for alderman: ‘‘For pure un- portera at Dominion hall laat night Dr. Edward Bowes was chairman. At the opening of the discuasion he asked for British fair play to all, and proceeded to carry out the program arranged by the Lalonde committee; that is, to call alternately upon “a Lalonde and Scott speaker. Dr. Bowes was an impartial chairman, and the immenge audience was atten- tive and ,oodnatured throughout the meeting. C. O. Lalonde, in his opening ad- dress, reviewed his services as alder- man in the city council of Port Arthur and said that hard times in that city forced him to seek. other fields for the operation of his business. He reiter- ated his objection to the reduction in the number of aldermen provided for Rossland, He said that during the year a great number of foreign people would visit Rossland and they would have to be entertained. He said the French government has already sent representatives to investigate the mining prospects of this camp, and he predicted thatin a short period Old France will make investments here. Smith Curtis dealt with the ques- tion of finance and advocated econ- omy. Dr. Sinclair in his address said that his only objection to Colonel Scott was that he allowed the incorporation bill to become mutilated in the com- mittee of the whole and did not stay at the capital to see it passed.
