SAVINKOFF 65-5554 prises esoeae ids A er Willlam J, Larocque and Emmanuel Lavictolre decided to go into the murder business for fun and profit. Both men owned scrub farms about a mile apart near L’Orignal, Ont. No: matter the amount of toil they expended, nothing seemed -to lift them from the abject poverty they endured day by day. Both men were approaching 60 and had been close friends for irs. During the severe winter months, huddled beside their Quebec heaters. puffing away on their, pipes, they plotted to insure the lives of acquaintances, murder them, and make the deaths appear to be terrible acci- dents, It is' doubtful if Larocque and Lavictoire ever considered the possibjlity of being caught. They acted openly, with little regard for concealing their. actions, r L was to be th air's first victim, Athanase’s father, Felix, was am elderly gen- tleman who resided in the township of Cumberland. Speaking as a friend of the family, Larocque approached larvey Cameron, an agent for Manufacturer's Life : Co. about young Cameron, ever, on the lookout for prospects, ought it a great Idea. Accompanied by Felix and Larocque, the young man was issued a policy for $5,000, with double indemnity in case of accidental death. Father: Felix handed over the first and was promptly named beneficiary. Athanase, who apparently was not all that swift, was: then boarded out with a Mrs.. Desjardins. This kind soul ran a home specializing in the. care of the mentally afflicted, Not satisfied with the sum of $10,000 on Athanase's life, Larocque was successful in obtaining * premium of $62.50, a princely. sum during the depression, : Was Their Only ee MID NNEC OO ROR, Wednosday, tity le, 1779 CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, July 19, 1979 ce Earl’s Private Pools i. 365-6774 Complete Line of Pools, Chemicals & Accessories. With Deschamp’s help, the men moved ‘the portable threshing mill out of the barn and settled down the horses, There lay Leo Bergeron, with half his skull crushed away. Within an hour doctors and police were ai the scene. Examined horse - Police examined the horses’ hooves. They were bloods- plattered. It looked like a pure and simple farm accident. efore the body was removed, a police officer made a _ strange discovery. He found a broken pitchfork handle on a dusty beam. It was obvious that the handle had been recently placed there. Nelther Larocque or Lavictoire “could explain the presence of the pitchfork-handle. The handle wasn’t perfectly clean. However, there seems little doubt that the two men were blackmailing Felix. Everything had come up roses for the two friends now turned murderers, They looked around for additional victims. Insuring their ‘Brey proved to be.more difficult than it had been with the unfortunate Athanase. Many applications were refused. For some reason, when they applied to La Societe des Artisans Canadienne Francais Insurance Co. for a $5,000 policy on Leo Bergeron’s life, the application was accepted. en the policy was issued, it of course contained the double indemnity clause in. case of accidental death.
