Pulpit & Pew By Pastor IRA JOHNSON Kinnaird Church of God SERVANTS OR SPOILED CHILDREN? History teaches those who are teachable. Someone has wisely said that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat its mis- takes. One of the most tragic mistakes in all human history was made by the Jewish nation. They considered themselves to be the “chosen people” of God (which indeed they were), but they lost sight of the purpose for which God chose them, and let their focus slip into a very self-centred, self-serving pride. God chose them to be a holy nation, a kingdom of priests, that would minister to all the world, not with force, but with the power of love and truth and self- sacrifice. (See Exodus 19:4-6) God sent prophets among them to bring them back to his true purpose for them, but instead they twisted the teachings of these prophets to support the idea that they were God's favorites and that the promised messiah would soon come to rule the world from Jerusalem, defeating all their enemies, and making them the ruling class. Consequently, they for the most part prided themselves on correct doctrine, correct rituals, and an imagined superiority that was sicken- ing to say the least. They were like spoiled children — self-centred, sel- fish and constantly trying to “use” God for their purposes. Remember, God had chosen them not to be Lords, but to be servants. They were to serve God, not for their own glory, but to share the truth of God and His love to all mankind. But they chose to ignore the pro- phets warnings and teach. ings and increasingly looked for the coming of a political kingdom in which they would rule. Is it any wonder then, that when Christ came as a suffering servant (Mark 10:42-45) They did not re ceive Him when He con. fronted the religious leaders with their hypocrisy (see Matthew chp. 23). They re jected him, and eventually succeeded in having Christ crucified. The man who eventually became known as the apostle Paul, lived his early life as one of these spoiled children. But when he came to realize who Christ was, he learned very quickly and very well. In fact, his first response to Christ on the Damascus road was, “Lord, what will You have me to do?” Job openings Details of these and other job nities are available at Tree required by o Trail based em ployer. (33T) *15 Castlegar 365-3388 He went on to an exciting life of Christian service that included many notable achievements, but is never insisted on his former “rights” as a Jewish religious leader. Instead, he assumed the role ofa loving and dedicated servant, and considered that lifestyle to be the highest use to which he could give his life. (See Philipians chp. 3) Christians are called to be servants. Too many Chris- tians try to “use” God instead of being used by God to minister to a hurting world. “Spoiled children” do not find life's greatest joy and hap- piness, but those who serve Christ with love, humility and compassion, do find life's deepest meaning. .
