ENTERTAINMENT JOHNSON TO STAY UNATTACHED NEW YORK (AP) — Don Johnson appears on lists for " the world’s sexiest men, played the Paul Newman role in ‘TV's remake of The Long Hot Summer, and now he's flying solo in his personal life. To help stoke the fantasies of Johnson's female fans, an NBC executive is promising the Miami Vice star won't have any strings attached in his professional life either. “Keeping him unattached makes a lot of sense,” said Warren Littlefield, NBC's senior vice president for series programs. “I know of no plans to tie down Don Johnson with any female character.” That means Sonny Crockett, the Ferarri-driving heart breaker in the Italian silk suits, will continue having one-night stands and occasional dalliances with exotic women who get bumped off or leave in tears Sleazeballs, played by Gordon Liddy and Phil Collins, may return in future shows, but Crockett's love interests sign only one-episode deals. “The feeling now is that as TV's sexiest man, we're keeping him footloose and fancy free,” said Littlefield. PLAYS SCENES In TV life, Johnson has had two torrid on screen romances so far this season. Both were with bad girls, in the criminal sense In the seasonopener, he was paired with a sophisticated-looking woman (Susan Hess) who was part of a drug-smuggling operation Last month, he was wooed by a classic beauty, played by French actress Arielle Dombasie In one scene, the camera caressed her as it panned slowly over her bikini-clad body. Later, she traded the bathing suit for a T-shirt, which she dunked in ice-cold Perrier before slipping it on. It turned out that she was part of a murderous scam (rock star Ted Nugent was her lover-accomplice) in which she lured men into drug deals before Nugent killed them and took their money Friday Crockett will be smitten by another wrong woman. Lisa Eichorn (Yanks) will play a mysterious French Interpol agent who is part of a terrorist group. Don't expect them to celebrate any anniversaries together. Part of Crockett’s appeal is his sentimentality and vulnerability. He's not supposed to be a callous love-em-and-leave-“em type but, on the other hand, a long-term relationship might inhibit storylines and smother his fans’ fantasy fires. WALKS FINE LINE Littlefield acknowledged that Miami Vice, an action show that gets steamier than Miami in August, must walk a fine line on Crockett's women. “If he had a romance every week the audience would tire of it,” he said. “But if he never had any relationships with outside female characters, the series could become flat. Earlier complaints about glass in a jar of strained peaches prompted dozens of supermarkets in New York state to pull Gerber products off their shelves. Gerber baby food sold in Canada is manufactured in Niagara Falls, Ont., by Gerber Canada Inc. There have been no reports of ion of its Canadi de baby food. ‘The parent company, headquartered in Fremont, Mich., said Monday it had examined the jar of strained peaches from New York and found no evidence of glass. The company also checked other jars from the store where the strained peaches were bought, and samples from the same batch, but found no foreign matter, said spokesman Jim Lovejoy. A Florida couple said they found glass in apple-cherry juice, while consumers in New York said they found it in jars of bananas and peas, as well as the strained peaches. Police in Swainsboro, Ga., said Tuesday they found “chunks more than slivers” in at least two jars of Gerber baby food. FINDS GLASS In Miami, Vicky Marton said her husband, Dennis, found the glass Monday in a bottle of juice he was about to give their five-month-old son, Tony. “He was opening it up and something caught his ear,” she said. “There was a grinding sound when he opened it. He got kind of concerned and he held it up to the light and saw glass floating in it.” Marton said they checked their remaining stock of Gerber products and found another bottle of juice with glass in it. Doug Schrock, an assistant manager at the Publix store where the Martons bought the baby food, said he has not received any other complaints. In Georgia, a woman reported she found the glass while feeding her nine-month-old daughter. A deputy sent to the home Tuesday found as many as 10 chunks in one jar and a neighbor found glass in another. The original jar was thrown out. At least three consumers in upstate New York reported finding glass in Gerber’s baby food recently. One customer reported finding glass in a jar of strained peaches Feb. 11. That led to other and prompted dozens of New York supermarkets to pull Gerber products off shelves. Gerber produces 1,500 to 1,600 jars of baby food a minute, and more than one billion jars of baby food a year, the company said TORONTO (CP) — Johnson and Johnson of Canada Capsule exchange There has been no estimate of the cost of the announced Tuesday the company will allow to exchange Tylenol capsules they have purchased for tamper-proof Tylenol caplets. . ‘The company and its U.S.-based parent announced capsules. ‘Their decision came nearly two weeks after a woman in suburban New York City died from taking & eyanide-laced capsule and more than three years since tainted Tylenol capsules were linked to the deaths of seven people in Illinois. Paul Mitchell, president of the Guelph-based subsidiary, noted there has been no tampering in Canada but the poisonings in the United States show the company cannot guarantee the safety of the capsules. Mitchell said Tylenol tablets and caplets provide the same relief from pain and fever while ensuring against tampering. A caplet is a solid dosage form similar to a tablet but is oval shaped and as easy to swallow as a capsule. in Monday they would no longer manufacture or sell the . the progr in Canada. A similar exchange in the United States is expected to cost $150 million. Capsule Technology's process, which can be used to seal any capsule, hermetically seals the two-piece capsule, Lukas said. Any attempt to open it makes it clear it has been tampered with. The company began developing the sealing device after the 1962 Tylenol poisoning in Chicago, but until now it has had difficulty selling the technology because the pharmaceutical industry chose instead to go with tamper- The company said it will run adver newspapers on Friday to give more details on the swap and invited customers who want to replace the capsules ‘The sealing machine, which sells for between $50,000 and $65,000, is about the size of a desk-top photocopier Wedndet ‘Al ‘THE C.P. (CP) — Can adians are in no danger of finding glass in Gerber baby foods and juices, the director of manufacturing for Gerber (Canada) Ine. said today Jack Merrett said in an interview that the Niagara Falls, Ont., plant is “an en tirely separate manufactur. ing facility” from those in the United States, where con. sumers have complained about finding pieces of glass in jars of peas, bananas, strained peaches and apple cherry juice. Merrett said the entire line of Gerber baby food for Can. adian consumption is manu: factured in the Niagara Falls plant. “We do have very sophis ticated procedures to be sure that such a thing can't hap- pen,” he said. The U.S. company receiv ed complaints from consum ers in Florida, Georgia and New York state about chunks of glass in a variety of Gerber products, but Merrett re. fused to speculate on how the glass got into the jars. Police refused to confirm residents’s reports that po- lice and soldiers entered homes in Alexandra, a town: ship set amid affluent white suburbs of Johannesburg, at about 2 a.m. today. The residents said the de- tainees all appeared to be members or supporters of the Azanian People’s Organ- ization, or AZAPO, a black- consciousness anti-apartheid movement. There were no indications AZAPO was behind the un- rest that has claimed at least 19 lives in Alexandra, and it was not clear why authorities might target the group. The group criticizes capi- talism .as supporting apart- heid and sees no role for whites in the struggle by blacks against the system of racial segregation. Police and residents re- ported no violence overnight in Alexandra. On Tuesday, Bishop Des- mond Tutu persuaded a huge mob of blacks to halt their march on a police station ringed by soldiers.
