The Panthers opened the scor- ing with four minutes remaining in the first period as Mike Pratt put a shot By Smokies goaltender Beau Riedel. But the Smokies retaliated two minutes later as Jon Newman scored the first Smokies goal in the BCJHL from Tyson Miller and Corey Bell. However, the Smoke Eaters weren't prepared to go away qui- etly and mounted an impressive three goal comeback with goals by Shawn McCann, Mike Hiebert and Ray Guze. Meanwhile, Riedel was working magic the ie. ie Castlegar native Mike Myhra (#17) was one of the bright spots and hardest hitters for the Trail Smoke Eaters in their home opener last Saturday. Smokies early as they took the play to Vernon in the first peri- od. The only thing standing in the way of an early lead was some bad luck combined with pipes keeping the score tied at four through the third period and the five-minute overtime. Riedel continued his strong game into the shootout, which was won by the Smokies on a goal by Castlegar native Jay Morency. Riedel stopped 45 Pan- thers shots to earn the victory. “Beau's definitely been seeing the rubber,” said Smokies head coach Dan Bradford Saturday night. “He was definitely the first star Friday night and he hung us in there. And that’s why we got Beau.” The Smokies arrived back in Trail at 3:30 Saturday moming and hoped to use the emotion general- eq in the Penticton game in their home opener against the Vipers. The first goal of the game was scored by the Vipers’ Doug Shep- pard who picked up a loose puck and snapped it by Riedel. The Smokies looked to have the perfect opportunity to tie the game as Viper Adam Stewart went to the penalty box for trip- ping Mike Myhra with just over a minute remaining in the period. But the Smokies inexplicably were assessed a bench minor at the end of the period to even things up. Things got worse from there as the Smokies’ Ryan Iannone took an imerference penalty 38 seconds into the second period to give Ver- non a two-man advantage. The Vipers took full advan- = Leafs tage, scoring two power play goals in less than a minute to take a3-0 lead. The Smokies responded with goals from Guze, assisted by Ian Lampshire, but that wasn’t nearly enough to stop the Vipers’ bite. Before the period was over, Vernon had scored five unan- swered goals, chased Riedel in favor of Jeff Eaton and decimated the Smokies’ zone defence. Trail came back with another goal in the third period courtesy of David Dumas but it was too little, too late. It was small consolation to Bradford, who blamed poor pass- ing in the defensive zone end for the loss. “We'll get blown out every night if we don’t start making passes out of our end to get shots on net,” said Bradford. “It was a tétal embarrass- ment for us, the coaching staff. SUN SPORTS PHOTO / Jeff Gabert We walked in after the second period and told them they had to do some soul searching if you want to play in front of fans like these. Bradford acknowledged the turning point of the game was the penalties taken at the end of the first period and beginning of the second but, overall, discipline was a factor. Trail took 12 penal- ties in the game. “Discipline was definitely a problem,” said Bradford. “You can’t play a hockey game in the penalty box at this level. Every- body is just too quick, too fast and too experienced with the puck. “You have to go out and initi- ate, not retaliate.” Bradford hated to disappoint the 1,100-plus fans on hand at the Cominco Arena, but vowed the Smoke Eaters will be a contender by the end of the season. My husband and I decided to start a family right away. A few days before I learned I was pregnant, I had exten- sive dental work and was in the dentist's chair for an hour, inhaling nitrous: oxide. Within a week, I mis- carried. I’ve never for- given myself for what I may have done to my unborn child. I never told a soul how I felt. Although we finally had a beautiful baby two years later, our marriage did not survive my guilt. I am now a single par- ent, and my son is the light of my life. Please consult your professionals, and tell me whether the nitrous oxide could have caused the miscarriage. I need to face the truth once and for all. — Mournful in Michigan Dear Michigan: According to the Ameri- can Dental Association, nitrous oxide may be harmful for pregnant women, although the risk is minimal. Sponta- neous miscarriage has occurred in cases where pregnant women were exposed to nitrous oxide for five or more hours. a week with inadequate exhaust ventilation. Approximately 50 per- cent of all miscarriages occur in the first three months. Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should inform their dentists. *Sept. 20 Happy Birthday Chris Makeiv Love allthe girls at the clinic *Sept. 20 Happy Bitthday Chris Makeiv Love Ginny, Brian Sept. 23 Happy Binhday Jeanette Love, Fred + Sept. 23.
