Kootenay Backyard

This is the sixth in a series of
eight tours around Poster
Kootenay Country. This week
we're walking and driving around
the Castlegar area.

For those who have wondered
if there is enough to see and do

the signs for Highway 3A and
soon you'll loop over Highway 3

ate left and drive back, parallel to
the highway.

Museum where you can tour two

lived for the first half of this cen-
tury. Another 200 metres along
the road is the NEC Gallery, with
a wonderful gift shop featuring
British Columbian art pieces.
Everything from earrings to vases
to woven fabric and art cards. The
Gallery has different displays
throughout the year.

Go back out to highway 3A and
double back to Highway 3. Travel
east up the highway out of Castle-
gar about 2 km until you reach the
Viewpoint. Turn right off the
highway, park the car and bring
your. camera. The view of the

you enter the driveway to the golf
course. It’s a short hike on fairly
good ground to one of the most
spectacular view of the Columbia
River and Arrow Lakes. It has to
be seen to be believed!

Back down the golf course

and follow the road to the bottom
of the hill. Turn turn right onto
Highway 3A and then in about
100 meters, turn off in the pull out
area on your right, before you
cross the Brilliant Bridge. It’s
time to get out and walk along the
path to the Brilliant (Doukhobor)
Suspension Bridge.

going across the Brilliant bridge.
Although there are delays up to 20
minutes, from your vantage point
at the suspension bridge you've
timed the crossing perfectly. After
the bridge, turn right along the
Robson access road and circle
under the bridge and travel along
the Robson Access road until you
reach the first intersection.Turn
right and climb the hill to Veri-
gin's Tomb. A home-made sign
will show you where to turn off
and park while you walk to the
steps leading down into the gar-
dens surrounding Verigin's Tomb.

Pass Creek Park, Robson and
eventually, Syringa Creek
Provincial Park.

At the intersection with Pass
Creek road, on your right you'll
see a landmark, the old Brilliant
school, no longer in use. As you
follow the Robson road you'll see
the new intersection and the new
Robson Bridge.

However, we'll cross it later.
Turn right and follow the signs
that say Robson. Just as the road
straightens out, turn right, and
then left onto the access road for
Pass Creek Regional Park.

Pass Creek Park has picnic
areas, a camping area and hiking
trails. There's also a warm, creek
fed pond with a sandy beach, per-
fect for cooling off. If you have
time to walk around and enjoy the
well maintained grounds, please
do. Over the next five years the
Lions Club and other groups will
be actively working to upgrade the
park including adding-a-soccer
field, improving the ball diamond
and the area for the firefighters
hose competitions, and enhancing
the natural beauty of the park.

Back out to the intersection,
turn right and cross the small
bridge over Pass Creek. The road
wanders along the edge of the
Columbia River so we'll follow
it as far as it goes.

Castlegar Bridge. Follow the
signs that say Castlegar and turn
right onto Columbia Avenue.

You're headed into downtown
Castlegar which is 2/3 of the way
through downtown revitaliza-
tion. At the lights at 3rd St. turn
right and drive down to the bot-
tom of the street to the intersection
with 13th Avenue, where you'll
find the Castlegar Railway Sta-
tion

follow the highway down to what

Island, so we'll follow 13th
avenue back to Columbia and turn

down to the four-way stop at 7th
Avenue. From there we'll turn
another four-way stop and contin-

train bridge was, for years, the
only way to get to Robson once
the sternwheelers stopped run-
ning. Back safely on the Castlegar
side, follow the well-worm path up
a small hill and you'll exit at the
back of Hooters Gym, beside the
theatre. Back onto Columbia
Avenue, turn right and walk three
blocks to your car. Drive home
safely and have a good rest!
