ENGINEERS STRIKE IN ENGLAND. Sixty-Five Thousand Men Are Out— A Manifesto Issued. The Engineers’ Union has issued a manifesto, which reveals the fact that ite struggle with the employers has reached the most momentous crisis in the history of trades unionism in Eng- land. The employers maintain the position announced by them a week ago, , Tefusing to meet the strikers in con- ference, and declining to depart in the slightest degree from the stand they have taken until the men retarsi to work unconditionally. The manifesto roundly denounces the employers’ rejection of the overtures of the strikers. Their insistence upon the of the ki to their terms, the. pronouncement de- clares, means their intention to crush the entire organization of trades union- ism in the country. “We appeal to our felt uw-tradea ” the continues, ‘“‘to answer the challenge of the federated employers. Both vessels were to have been launched this month, but the strike has rendered this impossible. In plain lan- guage this meant that Mr. Smith must dischargé us. For more than 21 yéara I have been a. meniber of the typographical union, I have worked at my trade during this time in all of the principal cities and towns in the United States. My adher- ance to union principles has never be- fore been questioned, and no union man has ever uttered the charge that I have sought to violate my oath .in letter or. spirit.
