ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD. BY EBEA C, BMITH, One Year in Advan eix Months One Month By Carrier by the Week. Single copy One Year, in adva: Six months, in ad: Single cop; SATURDAY, MAR. 18, 1897. ROSSLAND STOCK EXCHANGE. Mining men of this district will hail wlth delight the announcement that Rossland is to have a stock exchange. The iniquity of allow- ing a single brokerage firm to bull or bear the market to suit the stock it desires to buy and sell has been so manifest that it could be borne no longer. The Miner and Ross- lander have been a party to this state of affairs by giving a single firm the exclusive right to quote stocks. The said firm “was denicd the right in the Recorp because of the injustice it would be to ‘the other brokers and the injury that was sure to come to stock com- panies. Now that Rossland is to have a stock exchange the values of mining stock will be fixed upon an equitable basis and every broker will have an equal show. KJ. Bealéy was chairman and Ed- ward Ballie secretary. Ernest Ken- nedy, who has been active in securing the organization, said that in his opinion thy chief benefit ‘to be de- rived front. the exchange was that the stock quotations would be official. He moved that Rossland organize a stock exchange in order .to get the sense of tlie meeting on the subject. A few remarks were made and the motion was unanimously carried. A ittee of seven including the chairman was appointed to draft by- laws and attend to the preliminary Tagan "downs & & prlnetpta. which he aald it was the intention of the Canadian government to apply in all their tariff Teform measures. “It is well known, he said, that the tendency of the present Canadian government. has been towards « re- ducion of duty rather than towards an increase. We still desire to muve in that direction, unlesa events on the other side of the line make it impos- sible for us todo so. I do not think we ought to proceed on the assump- tion that it is the intention of the A ong to ii the coal duty.” After referring to the fact that the duty placed:by. the Canadian govern- ment upon bituminous cual entering Canada is higher than the American duty ho went on to say: : “Tf, however, your view is correct, and it turns out that the United States duty ie raised toa high figure, then we shall claim and cxercise the tight to revise our views already shipping ore.
