C14 7-Mile Visitors Can Now View ‘ Outdoor Work Spring has banished winter at the site of B.C, Hydro's _Seven Mile dam project on the Pend d'Oreille river near Trail, and outdoor work has now re- sumed. Visitors to the tourist lookout building will again see : concrete being placed by cable- ~T> way in the final top sections of je dam, \' Over 92 per cent of the ‘ultimate 660,000 cubic yards of concrete has now been placed in ‘the dam and spillway, Crews of machinists will be busy for the next several months installing gate guides and gates which will eventually contro! the flow of water through the dam and :powerhouse, + Most of the work carried jout through the past winter :was inside the powerhouse building at the toe of the dam, .~ >which was insulated and heated -0 protect both the work force ‘and the large amount of equip- ++ “ment being installed. “Although this winter was ‘very cold, work at the site con- ‘tinued on schedule during the ‘past few months,” said Ed Quirk, Hydro's construction manager at the site. . _ Inside the powerhouse, in- ‘stallation work is proceeding steadily on the first two-tur- bines, the first generator and the associated electrical and -mechanical equipment. The powerhouse has space :for four turbogenerators with a ‘capacity of 202,600 kilowatts each, Three are being installed now, anda fourth may be added at some future time. The first two units are scheduled for startup in the spring of 1980, with the third planned to go on line in the fall of that year. Filling of the reservoir behind the dam is scheduled for late this year. The Pend dOreille river is now diverted around the worksite through an 840-foot-long, 60-foot-high diversion tunnel, which will be closed by lowering a steel gate over the entrance. The tunnel will later be blocked solidly by a . Concrete plug. Seven Mile will be a ‘run of tithe river’ generating plant, . with water supply controlled by several other hydroelectric sta- tions upstream in the United States. The reservoir behind the Seven Mile dam will have an area of only 830 acres, of which 430 acres are existing river channel, and will stretch upstream nine miles to the U.S. border. With the resumption of 7 coutdoor activity, the workforce . at the project is rising to a total of almost 700, and will peak during the summer at around 750. The majority are trades- men from the area surrounding the project site, most of whom ~.- developed their trade skills at . previous B.C. Hydro projects. Twins Raised Apart, Still Remain Similar A team of medical and psychological researchers be- + -gan an intense study recently of identical twin brothers who . grew up in separate homes but “+ developed many similarities. : Prof. Thomas Bouchard of _ the University of Minnesota psychology department said the study may help explain * what impact environment and * ‘heredity have on human de- ” velopment. i The 39-year-old twins, “James Lewis and James Sprin- ~ ger, both from Ohio, are among only 73 recorded cases of - «identical twins raised apart. The brothers were separated weeks after birth and adopted -by different families. They were reunited recently. Be Bouchard hurriedly organ- .+ ized the team to examine the twins for four days after .” hearing of their reunion. _ He said he moved quickly after learning of them because . “now that they have gotten . together they are, in a sense, contaminating one another.” Springer is from Dayton, Lewis from Lima. Although - they grew up apart, both de- veloped interests in law en- forcement, carpentry and me- + chanical drawing, ~ ‘They both married and divorced women named Linda And vacationed on the same Florida beach. Relatives also say the six- foot twins have similar speech * spatterns, mannerisms and pos- = ture. Se Team members worked hs around-the-clock preparing for the twins’ arrival for testing.
