over the age of 15 have tried
marijuana and hashish. More than
1.3 million used the drug in the year
before the survey.

© Almost 300,000 Canadians use
marijuana weekly. Men between the
ages of 25 and 34 accounted for the
majority of such users.

© Young people between the ages
of 15 and 24 generally drink alcohol
less frequently than older Canadians.
But when they do drink, they typically
drink more. The highest average
number of drinks per week was repor-
ted by men aged 20 to 24. Nearly four
per cent of the people in this age
group reported consuming 28 or more
drinks in the week before the survey.

The government initiated a national
drug strategy in May 1987 at a cost of
$210 million over five years.
