Conroy fighting for Trail

inco reported two-year losses
of $100-million, prompting it
to announce the permanent
layoffs of 500 union and man-
agement employees. ;

Conroy said his party is
hardly ignoring the troubles in
the lead and zinc city.

eryone’s mind, because it is,”

“The bottom line is we have
to protect jobs,” Chisholm said
in a recent interview.

Liberal Forest Critic Wilf
Hurd also had some words for
the New Democrats, saying
“you can’t let 500 jobs go like
that.”

Hurd said he, Chisholm
and Labor Critic Jeremy Dal-
ton are planning to visit Trail
and region in March to assess
the impact of the job losses.

Initiative forum, the federal gov-
‘ernment was taken to task, led
by Castlegar’s Bonnie Evans.
“What the government needs
most.is a Minister of Common
Sense,” said Evans to the ap-
proval of the small crowd.

Co-sponsored by Selkirk Col-
lege and the Castlegar Chamber
of Commerce, the three-hour
meeting allowed residents to
share their thoughts on Canada’s
future in a global economy.

“(Canada) is not a democracy

The Ministry of Forests is
ready to listen.

The ministry will stage four
public hearings to find out if
there is any opposition to Pope
and Talbot’s purchase of the
Castlegar mill and Tree Farm
Licence No. 23.

Starting in Castlegar on Feb.
11, the ministry will tour the
region before making a decision
on the proposed purchase.

Last week, the City of
Revelstoke voiced opposition to
the sale, saying the proposed
split in TFL No. 23 will shut it
out of valued timber harvest.

Pope and Talbot is seeking to
take over 70 per cent of the
TFL, south of the Trans-Canada
Highway to Castlegar.

Another concern is the
prospect of job cutbacks at the
Castlegar mill.

his company was taking just 70

Trail MLA Ed Conroy worried.
He said he is unaware of any

Conroy said he is aware that
some jobs will be lost at the
Castlegar mill with Pope and
Talbot's purchase -of the reduced
TFL, but said it would be done
“through attrition.”

Conroy also said that Pope
and Talbot is planning to pump
between $10-and $15 million into
upgrading machinery at the mill,
meaning some jobs could be
eliminated.

“As a trade unionist, you’re
damned if you do and you’re
damned if you don’t,” Conroy
said. “You have to keep up with
bee technology, or all the jobs are
lost.” :

The time and place of the
Castlegar public hearing has yet
to be announced by the ministry.
