CAPITOL TRACTORS, A CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP 4700 Mannix Rd., Hwy. 3 Castlegar, B.C. Ph. 365-6747 Peel Arctic gull records most mileage during migration URGENT IN CASTLEGAR PUBLIC AUCTION 1e west like no one else. Part three of a four-part series examining bird mi- gration. Gary Davidson The distance that birds travel during migration varies considerably. Some may mi- grate as little as a few hun- dred metres from mountain tops to valley bottoms. Others may travel 15,000 kilometres or more. The champion long distance migrant must certainly be the Arctic Tern. This small, slen- der gull breeds in the Arctic regions of Canada and Eura- sia. After the breeding season is complete they fly to Antarc- tica. That portion of the popula- tion breeding in the western North American Arctic follows a fairly direct route down the Pacific coast. Those breeding in the east- ern region, however, follow a much longer route that takes more than three months. In one year some Arctic Terns fly 40,000 km. While no other birds can match the total distance trav- elled by the terns, many can stones and American Golden Plovers are known to fly non- stop from Alaska to Hawaii, a distance of 4,000 km. Many east coast migrants fly non- stop from the Maritimes to the northeast coast of South America. Even though this route is entirely over water, many small land birds follow this route. Favorable winds appar- ently make this potentially hazardous route well worth the risk. Even the diminutive hum- mingbird is capable of impres- sive non-stop flights — they are known to cross the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of 1,000 km. The speeds at which birds fly varies from species to species. Most. small birds maintain speeds of between 20 and 45 km-h. Ducks, swans and geese fly faster, up to 75 km-h. These speeds are some- times increased by favorable winds. A Ruddy Turnstone banded in Alaska and then re- captured in Hawaii must have averaged over 40 km-h for al- boast some non- stop flights.
