The interest lies not only in future negotiations, but in the Treaty's history as well Recently, a Rossland resident has put pen to paper and is ensuring that this history will not be altered or lost through time Earlier in July, Jack McDonald released his latest work, Storm Over High Arrow, a history of the Treaty McDonald has been lecturing about the Treaty for many years, and after some pressure by local groups, McDonald decided to put pen to paper. The 20-page book was authorized and paid for by the Rossland Rotary Club and is a overview of the political debacle that started in 1960 comprehensive McDonald, a retired West Kootenay Power engineer and current president of the Rossland Historical Society, was actively involved in opposing some of the more drastic measures that were rammed through as part of a political power struggle The book tells of then-premier W.A.C. Bennet, who worked to open up the Peace River area with dams, and Prime Minister . John Diefenbaker, who rammed the treaty so it would have his name on it for posterity during American president Dwight Eisenhower's last day of power The book also tells of Lester Pearson, who fought bitterly against the treaty while in oppo- sition, but then began a down ward waffle once in power The book is a must for anyone interested in Canada’s on-going role as Downstream Benefits are up for renewal. It can be pur chased at bookstores in Trail and Rossland, and at Alpine Drugs in Rossland. day, July 21, 1993 The C astlegar Sun Former Castlegar reporter awarded international appointment Terry Gilbert awarded Nieman fellowship to study at Harvard A former Castlegar re porter is among 12 international journal ists named as Nieman Fellows at Harvard University for the 1993 KFC working toi improve image Expanded menu targets new health-consious era KFC, the fast-food chain that will soon open a franchise in Castlegar, recently announced a $100-million (U.S.) effort to do chicken in a way that’s in keeping with the health-conscious 1990s. According to a Globe and Mail report last week, KFC is attempt- ing to change its reputation as a purveyor solely of fried foods. The company unveiled an expanded menu last week that features roast- ed chicken and such side dishes as salad and green beans. Kyle Craig, president of KFC USA, predicted the new line of products, led by the Colonel's Rotisserie Gold roasted chicken, could do $500-million to $700-million in its first year of business ‘That would translate to an annual growth rate of 10 to 15 per cent for the chain, which has been stuck with growth in the “low single digits” for the past several years, Craig said ‘The colonel’s new secret recipe for cooked chicken is about 40 per cent lower in fat and calories than KFC’s traditional fried chick- en. It’s unlikely at this point in time however, that the new menu, complete with rotisserie-cooked chicken, will be offered in all out lets. KFC began trying to transform its image about two years ago, when it changed its name from Kentucky Fried Chicken and rolied out a line of skin-free chicken. —— Obituary Molly Plotnikoff Molly Plotnikoff, aged 80 years of Grand Forks, passed awz ay July 10, 1993 at Vernon Jubilee‘Hospital.
