People do not like to think about being alone, growing old and finan
cial uncertainty. But, the possibility should be considered, especially by
women.

Women are more likely to spend the latter part of their lives living
alone due to the rising divorce rate and that, on average, they live about 10
years longer than men.

The most recent survey in the U.S. found that 17 per cent of women
age 55 to 64 were living by themselves as compared to 19 per cent of men
Atage 75 and older, 45 per cent of women live alone as compared to 19 per
cent of men. This, plus the concern that women make up the fastest
growing group of poor people, makes it imperative that all women, single,
married, widowed or divorced start planning for their retirement early

A 1986 U.S. government census reports that only 10 per cent of all
widows inherited pension benefits from their husbands and only 25 per
cent of all women received pension incomes themselves as compared to 50
per cent of all men who receive pension incomes. Although this situation
has been somewhat corrected in some provinces of Canada through
legislation, the problem still remains,

have a concrete goal. Decide at what age and with what income you would
like to retire. Look at your current assets, project their growth to the
desired retirement age and add in other sources of income such as Canada
Pension Plan, Old Age Security, or your own company pension benefit

Setting retirement goals and actively planning how best to achieve
these goals helps foster a retirement planning mentality. Most of us will
live longer as a retired person than we lived as a youth. It is important to
look at retirement as providing future opportunities and not a the end of
a productive life.

Tree seedling demand
establishes new record

This year’s order for tree seedlings
to renew British Columbia. forests in
coming years has reached a record 295
million Seedlings, or 23 per cent more
than last year, Forests Minister Dave
Parker has announced.

“The seeds for these trees are now
being sown in 39 private and three B.C
Forest Service (BCFS) nurseries in the
province,"’ Parker said. ‘‘These
seedlings are grown in the nursery for
one, two or three years before they are
ready for planting. The seedlings or-
dered are matched with the planting
site to maximize their survival and
growth.”

The 1989 sowing requests confirm
the projections in the BCFS’s. Five-
Year Forest and Range Resource
Program 1989-1994 that government
and the forest industry will be planting
more than 300 million seedlings an.
nually by next year.

The minister said the order includes
45 million seedlings in anticipation of a
second Forest Resource Development
Agreement (FRDA) with the federal
government. The seedlings are for
planting on the backlog of not-
satisfactorily-restocked (NSR) sites
denuded by insects, disease, fires or
harvesting in past decades

“Our goal is to catch up on that
backlog by the year 2000,”" Parker
said

“By law, our ongoing reforestation
programs how ensure that the com-
panies replace the trees they harvest. In
