Page 4B The Castlegar Sun Voice Within moving dramatization DIANA PARKER For The Castlegar ‘Sun The presentation of the play “Voice Within” at the Brilliant Cultural Centre May 14 was a remarkable and moving dramati- zation of Doukhobor history between 1790 and 1899. The play was filled with action, passion and song as it the life and p of the Doukhobors throughout the Russian empire. The audience was moved to tears on many occasions as they witilessed the separation of fami- lies and loved ones during a very painful time in their history. Despite the beatings of the bor people—first by the Russian Orthodox Church and then by the Czarist regime—the Doukhobor people were not swayed from their Christian beliefs, morals and ideals. Love of God, love of their fel- low man and a dedication to por- tray their beliefs in a peaceful manner, led to a nomadic lifestyle as they were exiled from one area to another. The climax of their pacifist faith took place on June 29, 1895 when they secretly burned all of their firearms and weapons, for which they were further punished by the military. More than 40 local youths were well cast in their roles and exhibited a tremendous dedica- tion in the production of this play, which has been in the making for over a year. The play was also presented last Saturday night. One thing that can be said about people is that we are never “boring”. We are complicated, yet simple, we can act as a mass, yet we are unique and special. We are alike yet not completely alike. Ask O.J. Simpson how important our DNA is. Sometimes we are tempted to think people are all bad because we see so much crime and injus- tice and it seems to be getting worse. I don’t think we hdvé' to look very far to see “good”, “kind” and “caring” people—not perfect, but caring. 614 Christina Place 8:00 Holy (8th, M.Div.) ST. But why do we do the things we do and get into the same trouble we did the last time we did it? Why are we attracted to mates who are opposites of ourselves. I remember one day my husband and I were in a book store. We both reached for the same:,booksal, the same time: It was called ” “You're Driving Me Nuts”. Those wonderful traits that drew us to one another were now driving us away. Complicated people. Yes! Understanding who we are is a big step to maturity. Knowledge doesn’t necessarily change us but it is the first tool needed if we do want to change. I have a bossy-take charge personality (which I am leaming to tone down and use in a healthy way). That style is what causes your friends who haven't seen you for years—and you are bald, heavier, wrinkled—to say “You haven't changed a bit!” In the next few months, I'd like to share with you some of the personality styles described by various authors in this field. I had injured my arm in a nasty fall, and it needed time to I was not about the prospect, and had told my daughter of my misgivings. No sooner, however, had I set- tled into the depths of that spa- cious health facility, than I gradually began to realize what a bright girl my daughter really was. The place seemed quite attrac- tive after all, with its compact spotless individual rooms, its wide hallways and general newness. It was the caregivers and nurs- es, who first caught my eye. They were, I found, so accessible, so easy to talk with and obviously eager to please. + Their looks dispelled the last place, for in their outfits most of which were similar, those girls could have taken a beauty prize anywhere. As if that were not enough when suppertime came around I was cheered to ‘find an airy, well-lit dining room in which I could see not a long eating table, but rather many small tables limited, as far as I could See, to only four diners apiece. I enjoyed my supper that first night, indeed as did all the other diners. I found the food to be tasty, certainly eeeily correct, and yet AND GOLD of my reluctance to stay at the Seniors “SUN ‘STAFF Castlegar seniors will be getting a boost, thanks to the Seniors’ Lottery Association of B.C.
