B.C. is discussing the possibility of acquiring some of Canadian Pacific Ltd.’s right of ways for parklands. And no one is happier than CP’s Steve Morris. According to Morris, CP Rail is anxious to get rid of the land if it can be transferred as a continuous corridor. “The land is still taxed against the railway so we want to get rid of it,” CP’s manager of public affairs said Tuesday. According to Morris, selling the land as a continuous strip would be easier for CP Rail than trying to sell individual pieces. As well, he said keeping the land intact would make it eas- ier for utility companies who are already us- ing the right of ways. “With telecommunication and pipelines ex- panding, railways make an ideal line continu- ing for hydro lines because of the existing cor- ridor,” Morris said. The province is looking to purchase right of ways near the Boundary subdivision, which runs five miles west of Castlegar through Rob- son. Should the land be purchased, it could than be transformed into a park for the Rails for Trails program. The land purchases are on hold, however, as the government negotiator Wes Umphrey awaits a letter from CP Rail. The letter is a follow-up to a Nov. 9 meeting in Vancouver between CP Rail and the govern- ment, the director of real estate services for the Ministry of Environment said. “When we get that letter it will lead to fur- ther meetings,” Umphrey said. If the government decides they do not want right of ways, Morris said the company will make the offer open to the public. “We will sell to whomever might be interest- ed. It could be anyone who wishes the corridor to remain intact, but ultimately the decision lies with us.” F CHURCH DIRECTORY" CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH 809 Merry Creek Rd. - Ph. 365-3430 PASTOR: BOB MARSH Sunday School 9:45 a.m. Morning Worship 11 a.m. Evening Services 6:30 p.m. For program information please phone 365-3430.
