,..........;..aa;....._ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ 12-Trail Times-Friday, Dec~!1:1~er7, 1979 with lla'ry Pepper Well, I predicted a weekend of pretty good curling at the Rossland Curling Club this past weekend and what I saw of it sure filled the bill. It was essentially a weekend for brother acts; two pairs of them were on teams that won the 'A' and 'B' events in the 4event 'spiel. Two of the Feeney boys were on the winning rink. Tom and Jimmy would almost fall into the veteran classification, Tom was third and Jim second on their rink skipped by Ken Robertson and with rookie Danny Tweed leading. They were undefeated throughout and knocked off Gerry Still of Nelson in the 'A' final. Still skipped a rink composed of Al Lowe at third, Fred Trusell, second and Dean Agnew at lead. Two other long-time residents of our town, both of them athletes of pretty good calibre, Cal and Dean McKerracher showed a lot of class in their 'B' event win over Trail's Roy Stone foursome. Dean skipped find Cal played third on a rink they brought all the way from Elkford where lead Wayne Wichert is the local doctor and second Bob Josephson is a mechanic foreman. Cal and Dean are wellknown for their work with the kids in ball and other sports around Rossland and Dean is the son-in-law of Russel Jones, a real veteran curler himself, brother-in-law David is the Rossland club president. The rink they beat in the 'B' final was no rookie rink either as every member of it has had his share of the spotlight when it comes to winning curling competitions. Besides Roy there was Canadian champion Frenchy D' Amour at lead, another member of the Feeney brother act, Dan at second and Roy's long-time third, Johnny Cameron, playing in that spot again. In the 'C' event it was another Rosslander, John Merkley, backed by Nelson's Red Koehle and Mickey Maglio and Trailite Torchy Toresan in that order, who beat Nelson's Wayne Farenholz, with Tom Vogg third, Barney Ross second and Ron MacDonald, lead. The John Bowles rink from Nelson with former Rosslander George Beaudry at skip, won the 'D' event, John played third, son, Kevin second and Sam Skulnec of Beaver Valley lead. Their opposition consisted of a rink of youngsters, skipped· by Grant Fines of Rossland and had Doug Bagshaw Jr., third, Ian Glover, second and Tony Popolinsky threw the lead rocks. To the winners go the spoils but it takes a helluva lot of good losers to make a 'spiel like this a success. To you all, my congratulations for a job well done. The Retirees Club finished its first competition on Friday last and as it turned out there was no need for a playoff. Going into the final round the Harry, Bateman and Popplewell rinks had one loss and Nonnan Harry was the only one who came out of it with just the one loss as George Kent took the measure of Angus Popplewell and Tommy Harrison handed Phil Bateman his second loss. Norman and his rink, composed of -third Len Scott, second Jm Mauchline and real veteran, George Nixon at lead, survived his battle with Russ Broughton's rink to win the first competition and the trophy that goes with it. New rinks have now been drawn and the second competition started_Tuesday. The Ladies Club sent five rinks to the annual Cominco Stenos Porn-Pon 'spiel over the past weekend and two of them came home with silverware; Dorothy Fines and her rink with Fanny Albo at third, Edie Harasin, second and Ollie Schultz lead, took the 'C' competition while Helen Ling and her foursome composed of third Hilda Miracle, second Shirley Williams and lead Mary Vickers took second in the 'E' event. Nelson's Carol Waters won the 'A' beating out Trail's Marion Brennen in a 'spiel tht all the girls agreed was super. This year Warrior fans have not had too much to cheer about but their first , victory celebration in a long time came Friday night of last week as the Rossland kids came from behind on two occasions to knock off the Grand Forks Border Bruins. The Bruins have had an excellent season this far and just because they have lost a couple of games lately doesn't mean they have had it for the season, but the Warrior victory must have been a big lift for our kids. Mike Oliver looked like the Mike we have seen for a couple of year. He hasn't exactly been hitting on all cylinders this far, his goal scoring feats were always a feature of Warrior games and to have a number all the time, not that big in stature but mighty big in the courage department, the other one is bigger but that doesn't seem to take anything away from his gutsy perfonnances. The game against Grand Forks may have been the forerunner of a change of ()attern in the Warriors' BILL NAZAROFF ••. on scoring line fortunes. Doug Buhr has a club that has a lot of potential and this could be about to show itself for the full 60 minutes of the games to come. If the Rossland boys ever do get it together for the full game as they showed was possible against the Bruins and previously in their last game against .the Junior Smokies, they could still be a real force in this year's battle for the KIJHL title fight. Anyone who saw the Philadelphia-Toronto game on TV last Saturday night had to be impressed with the way the Flyers handled thmeselves. It's pretty easy to see why they have a 21-game unbeaten streak going for them. Meanwhile the Canadiens are having quite a struggle, sometimes it seem that they are really having trouble on defence, where they used to be pretty invincible. They wouldn't be much this season without Lafleur. This could be a very interesting season before it winds ,up and if the Canucks ever learn how to live with success they might even have something to say about the Stanley Cup this season.
