A total of $12,000 in
recently-received provincial
- and federal aid will ease the

Bloom told the Castle-
gar News the centre re-
ceived last week a $7,500
cheque from provincial sec-
retary Grace McCarthy for
capital improvements and
$4,500 from National Mu-
seums of Canada to cover
operating costs last week,

In_ addition, he said,
National Museums has pro-
mised payment: of an addi-
tional $4,500 after the centre
submits an audited state-
ment and a revised budget.

“The idea is that this
will release us from the
pressure of worrying from

But spokesmen for both the Canadian Union of
Public Employees and the B.C. School Trustees
Association—representing the college and the Castle-
gar, Trail, Nelson and Grand Forks school districts—
expressed doubts about mediator Noel Hall's success in
preventing-binding arbitration of a settlement.

work Saturday by government assent to an amendment to the
Essential Services Dispute Act, Tuesday told the Castlegar News

Expansion
Contract Award
Expected Soon

The contract for addition of
a 10-bed extended care unit, a
second elevator and new main-
tenance shops to Castlegar and
District Hospital is expected to
be awarded by the end of this
month, , according to hospital
administrator Ken Talarico.

Talarico said bids ranging
from $380,780 to $427,197 sub-
mitted in sealed tenders by six
contractors were opened Nov.
30 and sent to Health Minister
Bob McClelland with the hos-
pital board’s recommendations.

‘The minister must award
the contract within 30 days
after the opening of tenders, he
said.

Tutorial Funds Planned for Secondary Students

Ootischenia Eyeing
Selkirk Well Supply

Ootischenia residents have
applied for federal aid in secur-
ing the groundwater source the
provincial government rejected
as a supply for Castlegar.

Alex Cheveldave, chair-
man of the Ootischenia Im-
provement District, told the
Castlegar News last week the
district has applied for an

Selkirk College well tested at a
cost of $31,362 by the provincial
water rights branch in June.

3 City Homes’ Radon Levels
Require Further Examination

Three Castlegar homes out
of 251 tested here and in Trail
six months ago for radon gas
levels may require remedial
action by health authorities,
according to Dr. Terence Pa-
gan.

Commenting on the find-
ings of the joint federal and
provincial health authorities’
survey which were released
last week, Dr. Pagan, director
of the West Kootenay Health
Unit, said only four houses
lested showed levels ranging
from .2 to .7 compared to the
15 working level recognized as
requiring further investigation.

specify the locations of the
three Castlegar homes which

“had the higher levels of radon
gas, produced by the radio-
active decay of natural uranium
deposits, Dr. Pagan said he was
hopeful provincial health auth-
orities would reduce the levels
to below .15 with “simple
measures.”

Robson Area Volunteers’
Training Starts in January

planned volunteer fire depart-
ment is expected to begin in
