Price of Expire Munday, Despite his very poor ns wai and various frailties he puts in retains his sanity, his sense zy repeated disappointments and even his sense igh yo This time, however, he has overreached himself and ended in hospital — down, but not out. And so he keeps me honest. Read on. Juanita Munday was one-month old yesterday (Mother's Day). This afternoon Nathan and Paula Bache Ider, young assembly missionary friends who topped my list of possibilities as Juanita’s future parents, called unexpectedly and announced that they were ready to take her. I'd spent all day nursing a sick liver, but despite my lowered spiritis 1 reluctantly turned over my most beautiful daughter to them and withdrew suddenly and silently into my apartment. It was something like the day I buried two-year-old Maria del Carmen. All good things eventually come to an end, but for Juanita I trust it will be but the beginning of a happy and fulfilled life. Nathan and Paula will make good parents. They have a delightful little two (or is it three?)-year-old as proof, but the doctor has advised Paula to have the remaining children “second hand.” My girls here who did most of Juanita’s “Mothering” were naturally saddened by her leaving us, but they've taken it well. We're keeping her baby clothes and teleum powder and unused disposable diapers in readiness for our next surprise baby. Within five minutes of Juanita’s departure a well- dressed Ecuadorian couple drove in for a “private .con- sultation.” It was the sadly common story of a cru} step- father and a helpless mother, the victim Mee this middle-aged couple's 14-year-old nephew. I asked them to give me a couple of days Ry consider the possibility of adding him to our Diospaj Nan family. Should I take him in, our numbers will remain the same ... at 33, as Juanita is no longer with us, though since I last wrote I have taken in a few more blind Our blind population as of now stands at nine, two of whom have epilespy. A third epileptic boy is not blind, but like so many others, has been rejected by his step- father. Yesterday (Sunday) was a too-full day that started too early and ended too late. A young couple I had the privilege of baptizing here some mohths ago decided to separate after four years of marriage, but before legaliz % brand name merchandi y 000 ~—and coupon savings ing the separation and subsequent divorce, agreed to talk it all over with me first. We spent an hour or so in the morning when I was able to talk with them individually and together. They stayed for our Sunday chicken dinner (again there were 40 to share five chickens) and sat through our Sunday afternoon service where the theme of “love” based on First Corinthians Thirteen proved particularly a propo. Before driving them to the bus terminal I felt re- warded by their promise to give their marriage one more try. Your prayers for them would be appreciated. Our last visitors of the day — and there were many — included blind Mauricio, now more than 26 years old. Shortly after his attempted suicide that cost the sight of both his eyes, a mutual friend started our friendship and when Mauricio was 14 1 was able to give him his first lessons in braille He comes from a wealthy but divided home, has mastered the organ sufficiently to make him self-sup porting as a music teacher and organist, has married a lovely girl and is the proud father of an equally lovely son and daughter. Mauricio leads an adult Bible study in a town not far from Quito. He may eventually form part of our “Diospaj Nan” team, for his first meeting with my blind boys proved tremendously successful. Please pray much for 20-year-old Rodrigo who left of his own accord a couple of months ago, but returned 10 days ago for a prolonged visit. We had a long chat together last night and he has a deep longing to know in a vital and personal way the God he suspects really does exist Last Sunday we had a welcome and unexpected visit from my Argentinian friend, Eric Erickson, whom I'd not ‘deem for almost 20 years The second and final round of Ecuador's presidential elections is now over and our new president, extreme rightist Leon Febres Cordero will be sworn in on Aug. 10, a national holiday. Because of a strong leaning towards the left throughout most of Latin America, it’s hard to predict what the outcome of all this will be or how long the new president will remain in office. On April 23, the American Ambassador's wife, Mrs. Shirley Hart, kept her appointment with us. She is a young bride, a wisp of a woman, with a warm, outgoing personality. She looked like somebody's petite fairy god mother as she waved from the backseat of her late-model, chauffeur-driven car. She held — and loved — 10-day-old Juanita, and was concerned that she could not remember the names of the children here she did her best to meet. She complained of her spike heels as inappropriate for her first visit to “Diospaj Nan,” but nonetheless skipped easily to the 500 with coupon off Wooico Reg. The Ophthalmology Department from HCJB's “Vozandes Hospital” spent a day with us on April 27 with several eye doctors and nurses present. The subject of eyes is particularly close to my heart and is a natural opener for a serious consideration of spiritual eyesight “as seeing Him Who is invisible.” While the majority, perhaps, had not made an all-out commitment to the Lord, they showed genuine interest and, Itrust, . Sara started off the program with three well received solos, and following a very full morning that included the Big Tour of “Diospaj Nan,” we served another of our famous four-course meals. Sara continues to have deep inner struggles and conflicts in her valiant effort to forget her unbelievable past and turn herself and her fears and her weaknesses to Him Who is victorious. She would appreciate your prayers for her in this difficult transition period. Although she was born in Birmingham, England, she is far more Jewish (her father was a Jewish rabbi) and Spanish (her mother a Spanish viscountess) then English, with the strong qualities of both. Next week she hopes to make personal contact with her 20-year-old son, Pablo, who is back in the clinic for further treatment for what the doctors have diagnosed as “chronic paranoia.” I've just returned from visiting a family in the neigh boring town of Pomasqui — at their request — for they have so many problems they are more than willing to join us for our Sunday and Wednesday meetings here. Three of the four children are studying at the Central University. Which reminds me . Victor (20), Ricardo (19) and Irma (18), will soon be graduating from high school to become university students, too. So many other things have ‘happened since | last wrote a whole month ago, but I long since gave up trying to keep a diary. As you might guess from what I've written to date, I've had many interruptions and more will follow, so I'll bring this to an abrupt end. I do thank you for reading this far, for praying, for writing and for so many ways in which you have shown your love and concer.
