suggest that the desire of ordinary
people to live ordinary but economi-
cally secure lives can be traded for
merely not starving, and that this will
become the new social contract.

I submit that the current bust varies
from previous events of this nature
only in the extent to which the

some new’ animal, called “Reagan-
omics,” yet a close examination of the
barnyard reveals the same old manure.

This is not to say that the industrial
magnates, millionaire politicians and
their attendant hordes of media toadies
have learned nothing from the past.

economic conditions result in extreme

concern about the “lack of democracy”
in the labor movement can be ex-
plained as an effort by business inter-
ests and their political hacks to exploit

wage rollbacks in times of recession,

and political powers-that-be .

Moreover,. we must recognize’ -
however difficult it is to accept from a
“relatively poorer” point of view —the
hard fact that it is in the interest of the

interest of. those still working, that
wage rollbacks, union-busting, attacks
on health ‘and, safety, and so on,. be
successfully resisted. ~’

Similarly, the labor movement
should continue to support the organ-
izing efforts of the. unemployed and
should increase this effort as times get
better so that the support of the unem-
ployed is a permanent priority, insofar
as unemployment seems to be a per-
manent feature of the economic land-
scape.

The results of these efforts can only
be more stabilizing and more socially
beneficial in the long run than the cold
and bloedy-minded policies of “supply-
siders,” “right-to-workers” and the rest
of the crack-pot crew who have taken it
upon themselves to justify the status-
quo in the name of “freedom” and
“democracy.”
