Let's Keep Our Love Alive was written by Castlegar Public Health Nurse Cindy Talarico. LETS KEEP OUR LOVE ALIVE As Valentine’s Day arrived our attention turned to romance. There has always been a HIV often experience anger, fear, loneliness, loss and grief. They and their loved ones need i a sense serious side to love. Pregnancy and lly transmitted diseases (STD’s) have always been with us. Since HIV arrived on the scene, romance has become more closely jated of belonging and p ll worth. Take the time to-reach out to someone who has been infected or affected by this virus. with risk. We need to become informed about these risks and love carefully. What do the three letters HIV mean? They This virus can get into our bodies when we have certain kinds of sexual contact with an infected partner. It can pass from one person to another through needle sharing for drug use or piercing and an infected mom can pass it to her baby during pregnancy, delivery or through breastfeeding. This virus doesn’t dis- criminate between men and women or between young and old. Once HIV is inside our body it goes to work on the immune system. Several years often pass with any noticeabl P It may take 10 or 12 years or more before the respiratory infections, skin rashes, weight loss, fatigue, h ail or cal problems arrive. While the physical effects of this disease are miserable, the emotion and social effects can be even more profound. People living with Many exp of love and caring are totally risk-free. We never get or pass HIV by talking, hugging, kissing, massaging, or shar- ing a meal. If you or your partner has had a previous lover or has shared needles, you need to consider the possibility of HIV or other STD’s being present. Honesty is impor- tant—especially if your romantic plans i ive sexual Whether it is genital to gehitat; genitat-to-anal or oral, or sharing of sex toys there is a potential for STD transmission. We can only pass on an STD if we are infected. Your family doctor or Planned Par- enthood Clinic can check for many of these. HIV antibody testing is available through your doctor or public health nurse. It can take up to six months after exposure to HIV for the test to become positive. If it has not been six months since your last possible exposure to HIV, the antibody test won’t be reliable yet, and you don’t want to take a chance on passing on an STD. You could wait until you are sure you are both healthy, or you could choose to use protection. A latex condom or dam can pro- vide a high degree of protec- tion against HIV, other STD’s and pregnancy. Recent research studies have show that they can provide 98 per cent protection if properly used. Novelty products can’t be relied on for this purpose. A little practical know-how helps too. For instance, con- doms and dams need to be in place before any sexual contact happens. »\.» Fhe latex must be in good condition; check the expiry prestige TOE to 15 per coat 1991 level since that year.” &, x date. Water soluble lubricants are compatible with latex, but massage oils, hand lotions, and petroleum jelly can weaken latex to the breaking point in about a minute Follow the package instructions and-after use discard it in a way that will protect others from handling it accidentally. Cost or embar- rassment doesn’t have to stop you from prac- tising safer sex. A small supply of free condoms is available in the public washroom of the health unit. Whether you choose to express your love with words, hugs, or in more intimate ways be sure to show you care by practising safer sex and encouraging your loved ones to do the same. Ed. Note—Like the article states, many of these preventative measures are 98 per cent successful at best. For complete protection and total peace of mind, men and women could practice abstinance until choosing a lifelong partner. There is such a thing as safer sex between two people, and that is when two adults have chosen to practice sex only within the confines of a lifelong relationship. _ Risk factors for reported AIDS cases Males, all ages Home/Bisexual Activity 81.2%. ~—Homo/Bisexual & IDU 3.8% Heterosexual Activity 53% Ne Identified Risk 4.0% (Pie charts are net te scale) Blood Recipient 1.2% Clotting factor 2.0% Perinatal 0.4% Injection Drug Use 2.1% Donations and ANKORS: P.O.
