November 7 has been fixed for the date of the Dominion elections and writs are returnable Decem! e- 5. Thus far it cannot be said that more than passing interest has been manifested in the coming elec- tions in this district, Both parties, it is true, have held conventions and nominated their re- spective candidates, and the labor unions have put upa third man; but the usual enthusi of perity of Southern British C bi bear living testimony to this. Since the Reform party was last returned to power and a reformer (?) was elected to represent us, look where we may, statesmanlike assistance has been wholly denied us by the Federal government. The public welfare in Yale-Cariboo has been shamefully neglected, while in Que- bec a Tammany, under Tarte, has been created, and an $8,000,000 sur- plus (which simply means unneces- sary taxation on the necessaries of life) has been piled up. The issues of the campaign are is the case in this constituency. A change is absolutel y, but this head inserted at the eeoacaoeaneslonanoosoncees .» THE CENTRAL... DRY GOODS STORE HOLSTEAD & WRIGHT. This is pretty tough on Mr. Gal- liher, we must admit, but what adout the electors? On the other hand the Liberal-Conservatives seem to have selected an excellent standard bearer in the person of Mr. A. H. MacNeill. In the five years that Mr. Mac- Neill has lived in Yale-Cariboo, he has ‘constantly manifested an ac- tive, intelligent interest in al! things bearing upon the prosperity of the district. He is not a politician, and it is just as well that he is not, but whenever occasion has demand- ed, he has, although a busy man in his profession, always proved him- self, a thoroughly public-spirited citizen and an ‘earnest worker in the cause of good government. In in all fairness, it may also be said of him that he seems to have an ex- ceptionally comprehensive and ap- Prectative: idea of the progressive policy that is required to make Canada a really great nation. It would bea good thing far this country if there were more like him in parliament. es W. B. Willcox, a well known newspaper man of the Boundary country, was married last Wed- nesday, at Phoenix, to Miss E. W. Crawford. Mr. Wilcox is pro- prietor of the Phoenix Pioneer, and at one time owned the Cascade Record and Broolilyn News. Con- pers and politicians alike, is want- ing. Still, the immense arez. of.the district, its widely diversified and exceptionally important interests call for the beginning of a rigorous campaign without delay. Too long has this district suffered from i P and indiffe repre- sentation at Ottawa. The next five years mean so much to the in- terior of British Columbia that it would be nothing short of the ver- iest folly to repeat the mistake of 1896 and elect another reformer(?) like our present member. It would not be inappropriate, P ly, to ider, fora in this connection the immensity of the Yale-Cariboo electorial district. Roughly speaking, it embraces al- most one-third of the total area of the province, It extends northward from the international boundary nearly 700 miles and from the sum- mit of the Rocky mountains west- ward to within 100 miles of the Pa- cific, Within its confines are the he purposed crossing the Atlantic in with his military career in Canada.
