Saturday, October 31, 1992 NEWS STAFF. | The trial of a local man charged with uttering death threats began Wednesday in Castlegar provincial court. Jung Kil (John) Chang, 51, is al- leged to have threatened taxidermist Steven Bruce Davis at a time when Chang was before the courts on charges of illegally selling bear parts. Chang sat quietly beside his lawyer as the issue of admissibility of an ex- hibit was discussed. Fabbro said the character rule, in his view, is not an absolute rule, and it al- lows for exceptions. Conservation officer Barry Farynuk continued his testimony fol- lowing the ruling. It was revealed that Farynuk of- fered Castlegar taxidermist Steven Davis immunity from prosecution for giving a statement against Chang. Court heard that for assistance with the witness statement, Farynuk told Davis he wouldn’t be prosecuted under the Wildlife Act. With new provincial legislation around 1990, one of the two people in a bear parts transaction were required to have a fur traders license. During cross-examination, Fary- nuk agreed with Carpenter that it was illegal for both Davis to sell the parts and for Chang to buy them in Decem- ber 1991 because neither had a fur traders license.
