Pulpit & Pew By PASTOR IRA JOHNSON Kinnaird Church of God WILL Where is God when good people suffer? How can a loving God allow so much suffering and injustice to go on in our world? Is it God's will when all kinds of people are killed by an earthquake, or by a bomb that goes off in a jet-liner in flight? These and many more questions fill the minds of believers and non-believers alike, and cry out for an answer that is not only rea sonable, but true. The book of Job in the Old Testament deals with the fact that sometimes even the best of people suffer, even those with a strong religious faith. A careful reading of this book can be of help in answering the above ques tions. However, a large part of our problem is understanding God's will, is that we look at it as a single entity, when in reality there are several layers of aspects involved in God's will. Leslie Weatherhead in his helpful book The Will of God Honey producers to meet The West Kootenay Di. vision of the B.C. Honey Pro- ducers Association will hold its annual meeting at Selkirk College's Castlegar Campus Oct. 9. A short business meeting will be followed by a slide presentation by the former B.C. Provincial Apiarist, John Corner. Over the last few years Corner has worked with bee keepers in Uganda, Nica ragua and Guatemala. Most recently, he has been instructing beekeeping to students from developing nations at the University of Ohio. For those who wish to learn about or review their knowledge of honey bee diseases, an evening session will be held at Selkirk College's Castelgar Campus Oct. 15. The apiculture field representative for the West Kootenays, Holly Ridenour, will be instructing. The Intentional Will of God The intentional will of God is His ideal purpose for your life and mine and the lives of every human being! God does not intend that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9) “God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoso- ever believeth in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life” (John 3:16) If our first human parents had used their power of choice for only that which was good and godly, and all succeeding generations had done the same, there would be nor war or injustice or tragedy of this sort Even though all mankind has disobeyed God, and have allowed evil plans and actions to develop in their lives, God still reaches out to them in love and goodwill, if only they will repent of their folly Because God has given mankind the power of choice, that involves a “self-limi tation” upon God's inten- tional will... which we will consider just now The Circumstantial, Permissive Will of God David Seamonds writes as follows concerning the per missive will of God: “Not only do we humans have imper fections and infirmities, but SCHOLARSHIPS the radical defect of imper fection goes through all of nature with its disasters. Sin is so serious that it has caused a radical imbalance and imperfection in the created cosmos. Because of that imbalance, because of human folly and sin, because man’s free-will creates cir. cumstances of evil that cut across God's plans, there is a circumstantial or permissive will of God.” Suppose an infant fell out of a fifth storey window and was killed. Should we look at that as being God's inten. tional will (that He caused it to happen) or as his per missive will? Should God suspend the law of gravity that enabled that child to walk on the face of the earth in order to cover up for the carelessness of the parent who left the child un guarded in a place of danger? Hardly Even the best of Christians are sometimes called upon to suffer unjustly, but as the apostle Paul wrote in Ro mans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his pur pose!” As David Seamonds ex presses it: “God Himself does not change or undo the nature of a tragedy the evil of it, the awfulness or pain of it. However, God can work with us, changing the meaning of that event to our total life, working out His will in the circumstance.” The Ultimate Will of God The ultimate will of God can never be finally defeated Just as mankind has dammed up rivers aad diverted them, yet. man cannot prevent those rivers from flowing finally into the sea! So God enables the trust ting soul to overcome despite the sufferings and injustices and infirmities that may fasten themselves upon that person. One of the greatest Bible scholars of our times’ William Barclay, realized at the height of his Christian mini stry that he was going deaf He could have turned in on himself in self-pity, and to ward God with bitterness and loss of faith. Instead, he grasped the power of Ro mans 8:28 and went on to do some of his most important writing as he completed his daily study Bible commen tary You and I can trust God to work out his ultimate will in our lives too, as we keep our faith fixed firmly in God faithfulness and His sov ereignty!
