ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, MAY 18, 1899, WORSE THAN ABIL Pa Releused Prisoner at Wardner Tells a Startling Story. WORMS IN THE MEAT FED STRIKERS Condition of the Alleged Dynamiters at the Coeur d’Alene Bull Pen. “T saw worms on the meat which was fed to the atrikers at Wardner who are held as prisoners. No knives or spoons were provided for the men. Company M of Spokane has treated them like hogs. The men fared much better with * Company K and Company B of Vancou- ver.” : ‘These startling statements were made at the Spokane Chronicle office by Fran- cis H. Butler, And Mr. Butler knows what he is talking about, fur he was one of the men arrested with the strikers, and spent eeven wretched days in that wretched'bull pen which has been used ass prison by the United States troops. Extracts from the interview follow: ‘The experience in prison was awful. Seven hundred men have been crowded into a place that is not large enough for 250. Of those 700 only 150 have blan- kets. “During the nights the rest crawl) around and try to get under the corne: of some other fellow’s blanket.” sg J. -F._ Fitzpatrick, the sanitary plumber, has removed his office an shop to the corner of Columbia avenue and Washington street, under Cap Shaw’s cigar store. ti. ir dité. v ° Stocks Quotations. “The fcllowing quotations are made up from the quotations from Montreal, To- ronte and Spokane, and the local mar- ket for stocks not on the boards.
