As a child he wandered away from home to see

parades ..

and figured out if he coughed on his brother's cupcake,

he got an extra dessert.

He sold our cancelled checks door to door,
registered us for a freo ham (and a visit from an
encyclopedia salesman), made our first overseas phone
call by direct dialing from a private home without
directory anne and made history by catching a

broken leg at car

In 1966, | Arete that parents are awed by genius,
adjust to the average child, and are compassionate
toward the slow learner. But the child who stands apart
and is none of these things only puzzles, confuses, and

tries their patience.

They fear for the future of this rare, unpredictable
child who Is not only out of step with the world, but If
there's a puddle or a pile in front of him... . will step in
It.

What has happened to this child-turned-man whose
destiny filled me with apprehension?

He lost his billford In the Grand Canyon, but the trip
back to look for it ‘twas worth it."" He forgot birthdays,
but when he remembered, the gifts were warm and
personal and melted your heart. He set a record for
having a tape deck installed and stolen within three
hours, but held no malice. He left his space maintainer in
a sandwich he was reheating In the micro-wave oven, but
paid for a new one with his own money from his paper
route. He borrowed the car and when the radiator boiled
over, poured Orange Crush in it, but he was contrite.

His mail consists of brochures from causes and
needs all over hte world. His desk is scattered with
unpaid traffic tickets and his bilifold holds three
duplicate driver's licenses. He rune his car on E, writes
35 checks a week, and has never bought a bottle of

shampoo in his entire life.

1 have never heard him say, “ 'm too busy to talk to
you.'’ Never heard him complain, ‘'The world is rotten.’
Never known him to be Intolerant. ~

maybe even a clean sweep of
their rooms, wrapping a present
or two may be just enough dis-
traction for youngsters.

should be part of your Christmas.

sure. That means you should

the family for group pictures, ar-
range them so that everyone
looks relaxed. For example,

most people look more formal
when standing, less so when sit-
ting.

While pictures of the tamily
are essential to that Christmas
scrapbook, simplicity is also im-
portant.

Putting too much in one
photograph makes it look clut-
tered and possibly not as inter-

esting. The trick is to take more

pictures and zero in on one activ-

Dogwood certificate

B.C.'s Open Learning
Institute will launch a new
series of secondary school
completion courses for adults
in January which will lead to
the B.C,- government-recog-
nized Dogwood certificate.

Alan Dawe, director of
adult basic education at the
institute, said the program
will enable an adult to com-
plete secondary school within
two years of part-time study,

He said two essential
factors are recognized by
OLI's high school completion
program.

“We realize that adults
keep on learning after they
leave school and acquire a
host of occupational and gen-
eral skills and knowledge,”
he said. “We also recognize
that adults can't afford to
spend the time that younger
students expend in reaching
school leaving standards so
we've designed our program
to bring adults to their next
educational level as quickly
as possible.”

The Open Learning In-
stitute was established by
the B.C. ministry of ed-
ucation in June of 1978 to
provide home-study courses

for British Columbians who
can't attend conventional in-
stitutions.

Duwe said students
must complete four courses
to. obtain Grade 10 and
another seven to obtain the
Grade 12 Dogwood certifi-
cate on the adult interrupted
program.

Dawe said the courses
will be in a traditional cor-
respondence format backed
up by a unique telephone-a-
tutor system and a strong
advisory service.

“Each student is assign-
ed. a. tutor whom ‘he can
telephone free of charge
when he needs help with his
course work,” said Dawe.
“We also have advisors sta-
tioned in strategic spots
around the province whose
job is to assist students with
any non-academic problems
they might have.”

Dawe said the cost of
each course is $25.

pital drilled a hole in the
front of Stewart's left eye
and screwed in a plastic bolt
containing tiny. lenses. "It's
like a camera,” Stewart said.

He lost his vision when
his wife, Iola, threw a mix-
ture of lye and ammonia in
his face during a fight three
years ago. His right eye was
destroyed, and the left so
badly scarred that a cornea
transplant was impossible.

ful, risky, and surgeons say it
may not be permanent,
