Council: chairman David Slater said at a news con- ference the program should be directed at the small proportion of the more than 1.2 million jobless who are uneducated, without~ skills and who bear a dispropror- tionate burden of long-term unemployment. The proposals come ‘about a week before Finance Min- -ister Allan MacEachen is ex- pected to present an econ- omic statement in the Com- mons, Slater: said the program would be less inflationary than proposals from econo- mists, opposition MPs and labor unions for income tax cuts or _ mortgage: -interest il from income POWER LINE PROPOSAL CTV NATIONAL NEWS: news Residents rap VALEMOUNT (CP) — Residents of this village near Jasper National Park want a B.C. Hydro power line — but: not along a scenic highway or through a bird sanctuary. And they expressed their displeasure at a recent meet- ing. After numerous questions and examinations, one frus- trated resident asked Mur- ray Deines, Prince George manager handling the contro- versial construction, if he is going to take the matter to _ head office. “No,” Deines replied, to a chorus of jeers. “We don't object to the line going in — it’s just you won't listén to our concerns,” said Ron Harkness. Hydro's plans to build a distribution line from the Valemount substation through the town and along the mountain-view highway to McBride have met with stiff .opposition from area residents — after they found out about it, Hydro secured the neces- sary Highways ministry per- mit and’ proceeded with sur- veying and construction without notifying the village, the regional district or asking for ‘any local input as to where this tourist-oriented town of 1,200 would like to see the line go. Residents discovered the Crown company’s plans when they saw the survey stakes and poles being placed along the mountain-view route and through a bird sanctuary. LINE NEEDED ~ In the planning stages for more than two years, Hydro says the standard pole and erossarm line is necessary to * replace an obsolete diesel generating plant at McBride and: the route through the town is the | cheapest and Hydro At a cost of $2 million, Hydro says it's willing to ‘consider resident's request to locate the line along the old highway behind the town — if the residents or regional district foot the bill. “We've worked hard to bury our lines in view places and all we're asking is con- sideration and you shoot us down.” Deines said Hydro did not take the tourist view into consideration when the route was chosen. “This is a fragile resource and anything we put in there - -that will detract from the re--. source is not acceptable at any cost,” said Mayor Jack Nicholson. Hydro says escalating fuel costs for the McBride plant make it unreasonable to con- tinue and that each of thé 850 residents on the system are ized $1,600 most 1, ually Slocan Recreation plans Summer Sun and Fun Regional Recreation Com- mission No. 8 from the Slocan Valley will be starting its Summer Sun and Fun Pro- gram July 5.
