B4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 23, 1980 Level reduced Hopes to stop crack developing upstream = The water in the reser- "voir behind B.C, Hydro’s Seven Mile Dam is being re- duced from its present level of 1,714 feet by one foot a day ! for the next two weeks to control soil creepage on the } reservoir's north bank, Spring *} run-off saturated the soll — a common occurrence in the 3 Pend d’Oreille and Columbia = river valleys, : There has been regular } monitoring by Hydro geotech-, : nical engineers since a local ? resident, Michael Newman, : noted a crack developing ina : slope about a mile upstream "of the dam. During the un- : usually wet summer the crack ; has widened and some soil displacement lias occurred. A stability analysis indi- cates the drawdown tech- nique being used will mini- mize slippage and allow ex- cess water to drain from the soll, After the lowering of the reservoir the affected slope will be treated to achieve stability. Engineering studies are currently determining what the most appropriate course of action will be. The crack causing con- cern is now about 2,500 feet long and eight inches wide. While Hydro believes there is no danger to the public, they are being asked to stay out of the area in the meantime. The street groups emerged by the hundreds from the city’s garages to play for the door in the. dozens of beer joints and clubs that served as incuba- tors for the new music. It was a photograph on a cheaply printed poster ad- vertising one of those club appearances that first brought Shandi to the at- tention of producer Mike Chapman and_ partner Nicky Chinn. And after catching one show, watch- Cl ing the dramatic and sassy stage movement and listen- ing to the engaging, Street- + tough songs and searing, technically impressive vocals, they were deter- mined that the lady with the rainbow hair would be among the first_artists on the new Dreamland Records label. It didn’t take long for other record executives to jump on the bandwagon. In the ensuing months, a bidding war took place among the major labels on a level that has seldom been seen before or since. Rumors spread from offices . to the trade magazine columns and back again to the streets. Shandi's even- tua! signing to Dreamland Records was an event in itself, and it's a tribute to her talents as an artist and Mike CGhanman’s as a producer that her debut album for the label bears out the enormous expecta- tions that preceded it. With the release of the first Oreamland album, it’s apparent that seldom has an artist been so well- matched with a producer. Shandi's soaring vocals and relentlessly driving songs are perfectly framed by hapman's deceptively sparse production and the raw power of tunes like ‘Show Down,’ ‘Walk The Streets,’ ‘Bottom Line’ and ‘Heart Beat' heralds a major new artist and one of the most significant new voices to emerge from the modern music scene. With her first album cer- tain to make a major impact on rock ‘n’ roll, Shandi looks forward to hitting the streets across America once again. “After all these years,” she says, “I'm still’ singing for my supper."
