LOCAL NEWS Red Cross increases local role Beginning in September, the Red Cross office for the Kootenay region, based in Castlegar, will be taking a much greater role in the delivery of first aid and CPR courses in ihe East ‘and West Kootenay. “We will be a supply and resource centre for all CPR instructors and all Red Cross first aid and Childsafe in- structors in the region,"” program coordinator Karine Johnson said in a news release. ‘‘This means instructors will order training materials through Castlegar, have access to teaching equipment such as training man- nequins and will be able to receive cer- tification in CPR, first aid and Child- safe through courses sponsored by the Red Cross.’” These functions have been limited in the past and administered from the B.C.-Yukon Division offices in Van- couver. However, it has now been decided that all first aid and most CPR training needs should be managed. closer to the communities and the instructors. There is a network of CPR instruc- tors in the region who meet regularly to be sure the program is running smoothly and meeting national stan- dards. As for first aid, the Red Cross offers and dard first ald and first aid for teachers. A new program, Childsafe, is also being of- fered and is geared to new parents, who learn the basics of first aid for children as well as preventative safety. “We're really excited about the potential for Childsafe,’’ Johnson said. “Tt has had @ very positive reception so far and we expect the demand for courses to increase rapidly in the fall.”’ A training course to certify instruc- tors in CPR, first aid and Childsafe will be held Sept. 21-23 at Selkirk College in Trail. . . opportunities. * 8 «6 In 1968, Syringa Provincial Park was set aside for your learning and recreation experiences.
