Rossland is holding her breath for the initial work on the Robson branch of the C. P. R. to this city. Some days ago it was given out that Rossland could celebrate the completion of this road within ninety days. This news was gencrally believed but as no contracts have been let yet the people are becom- ing skeptical, not that the road will not he built, but that it will not be com- pleted in such haste. of the branch between Rossland and Robson, this winter, will pnt that read a year ahead on Rossland businesg. To build the road now it can be ballasted while in use during the summer and pnt it in good shape for next winter. If the building is delaved until summer the ballasting will have to go over until the next summer ag it cannot be done in the winter, It will be seen that three months vigorous work now will save a whole year’s Iusiness for the C. P. R. and that is the best that it travers Hardware Co. DRY GOODS FIRMB. The Crescent. MILLINERS. Le Bon Marche. LIVERY STABLES. Red Star Livery & Transfer Co. Palace Stables. DRUGGIBTS. Geo. A. R. means much for Rossland this winter. The employment of 3,000 men in this vicinity will put new life into business of every kind. There is no denying that without this work it will be close rustling for many of the business houses before next April, but with it all will be well. It will be a surprise to the outside world to know that Rossland, so young, ig badly in need of an eight roomed school house and that the contract has been let for its construction, this too in the face of the fact that we already have a good school building of four rooms. It has been difficult for the officials of the provincial government to realize what the needs of Rossland are upon the subject of schools and a visit to our rapidly growing city by the prim- icr himself was necessary to convince him, but -being convinced, immediate eteps were taken taken to furnish nec+ cessary #chool facilities, and it is thought that the additional eight rooms will do it. Let the Rossland Loard of trade take up the subject of the manufacture of the lead of the Slocan and see if it is por- sible to treat these ores nearer at home. At present they cannot be treated thie side of Colorado. The cost of shipping the product, lead and gilver, to the New York market 1s too great, fur it costs legs to send the ore iteelf, and it will al- ways cost less to treat and refine ores in the east than in the west. ere A Grand Affair. Prof. Graham, the gentleman who is atthe head of the mardi gras carnival wirhes to state that it is not at all nec- essary to go to any great expense in get- ting up costumes to represent your trade, eomething original, without great expense, will make the greatest hit. Jud; from the number of costumes promised, and under way, up to the present time, it goes without saying that the mardi gras will be the largest and grandest affair ever held in Rossland. Costumes for the Carnival. A costumier will be at the Dominion hotel from next Monday until Thursday evening, the night of the Mardi Gras carnival, with a line of costume designe, ‘The rates will be reasonable. —_12-9-1w DON’T FORGET.
