Leadership is the first requisite,- and this Buller proved himself not to” possess. A leader makes his subordinates .clearly un- derstand their orders and.has such control over them as to ensure their execution of those orders to the let- ter. He had not this control over Colonel Long at Colenso, or the lat- ter would not heve disobeyed orders and lost his. guns. He had no proper control over Warren at Spion Kop, or the bungle would not have occurred that Imi d in the time, but clearly the fault is not his. —Seattle P.-1. - Ifthe C. P. R.. paid Joe. The old cry of a “labor “cangidate for the legislature was raised at the about ight and hindsight does not apply with full force in this case. Buller could turn his hindsight to Laing’s Nek, Majuba Hill and Krugersdorp, and apply the experi- ence of those disastrous days to the conditions which confronted him on the Tugela. The truth is that Buller isa good enough general.to fight Zulus, but he lacks the ability to combat white men leading armies which equal his owa in drms,_ spirit and courage. In fact, his experience on evening, at which Thomas Beamish, that dis- tinguished worker of the working- man, was a shining light. The one idea running through the speeches was to stir up class prejudice against any but a workingman as antagonis- tic to the interests of labor. The theory that a representative should be elected simply as the-can- didate of the workingman-without regard to any other class is vicious and d ‘ive of free gov —just as much so as the choice of a representative put up by any other class, by.a single church, or a single nationality. A man elected to the legislature should represent all in- terests and all classes, and work for their common and separate interests. As to how these interests can best be promoted, there are differences of opinion in all classes—working- men, employers and merchants alike —and the only manner in which men of one class can be united in support of one candidate is by in fighti ges may have been a positive disadvantage, for it would be apt to develop that ‘WANTED—1000 men wanted on the Lake Bennett division of the White Pass & Yukon railroad. That'Governor Mackintosh would be as thorough a representative of ‘ the workingmen as of all other classes in the community is plain from his public record, from his platform and his public utterances.
