KINNAIRD JUNIOR " SECONDARY SCHOOL What's the weather going to be like this weekend? That's the usual March question. Here's a guess fron Danny “Sheets of rain Blankets of snow BED weather!” * 8 6 A really weird thing hap- pened up here last week. We discovered that hardly any of our Grade 8 students know what the word “mutton” means, Honestly! It's rapidly going right out of our language, judging by the reactions we gel One boy thinks it means “some kind of fish.” Others are equally vague. It really set us to thinking... Do you know what it means? One of our teachers, who used to work ina supermarket, said that meat sellers feel that the name “mutton” has bad vibrations. (It “turns off the customers.) That is why they have discontinued using it. (Mutton—glutton??) Whatever the answer, we " ‘would like to, know one thing: We still have veal and “beef.” But if there is no “mutton,” does that mean we are choosing between “new lamb" and “old lamb"? eee It reminds us of Tommy in grade three. He said to his teacher, “I'm sorry I was away yesterday, but I had to stay home and look after the old baby.” | The teacher reproved him, saying, “Don't you like your baby brother?” Tommy looked puzzled for a moment and then said, “Sure, I like him, I mean he's just the old one!” When he saw that the teacher still explained patient- ly, “My mother just had a new baby, sol had to stay home and look after the old one!” Perfect- ly logical. B . Perkaps there's something else that needs straightening out... The average age of Grade 8 ‘students is 18. Do you know what that means, all you people out there who are married and settled down and have lived three decades, or four, or five {or maybe six?) It means you have to be patient with us... We've only been reading for six years! Somehow, people who are sure we're a stupid lot will say, “Thirteen years old, and still can't read!” ‘Well, we haven't been at it too long. We only learned six years ago, remember... Give us time! . . By the way, how long does it take to become a really good golfer? Or a curler?? Or a cook??? . 8 6 One of the most popular courses up here has always been “industrial Education,” taught expertly by Mr. Mar- tin, Well, this year,"the girls dno doubt by Wo- FOR YOUR SHOPPING CONVENIENCE . “Hill 5:30 PLM, Closed Sundays men's Lib) decided they wanted to learn how to wield a hammer and saw, just as well as the boys. (both wood and metal}, Six boys and 10 girls ara enrolled, working side by side. Everyone seems to be enjoying it, and we promise to have pictures taken of the finished projects! They'll be impressive. 8 8 Last week Bert Franks won the school spelling sample with “insignificant,” More spel- lers each week are qualifying, and that’s an encouraging sign. * 8 8 Our ‘A’ rep boys’ basket- ball team “did us proud" by placing third in the recent West Kootenay play-offs . . .
