All my life savings went into this ven- ture. Broke is not the word for my status now.” Ramel said he was in- formed his contract to ope- rate the Knockwurst Corner at the east end of Expo was cancelled because of “a fail- ure in cash handling,” mean- ing Expo financial monitors believe his operation was not turning over all royalties to the fair. “How much money are they saying is missing?” he asked. “I should be given these figures and given a chance to defend myself.” Ramel said he had received one previous warning from Expo and was given the name of an employee alleg- edly skimming money. He said he did not fire the employee because he had no proof. Instead, he warned all 14 employees of the alle- gation and said they were being monitored by Expo. Ramel learned his contract had been cancelled Saturday morning when world's fair staff closed the facility. At noon Saturday it reopened under new management. It is the first time the fair has actually cancelled a con- cessionaire contract and in- stalled a new operator under a new contract, Expo chair- man Jim Pattison said. He would not elaborate on the reasons for cancelling the contract. Expo spokesman Gail Flit ton also refused to offer a more specific explanation for the cancelled contract. “We never do that,” she said in an interview today. “Breach of contract is as definite as we can get in public.” The new operator is Am bassador Industries Litd., which also operates the Ba- varian Garden beer hall. Pattison said Expo has al- ready signed a contract with Ambassador. males — have found new prominence in the. Alberta capital. From 1975 to 1986, the Progressive Conservatives ran the government and held more than 90 per cent of the seats. \ They were committed to individual rights. They included \women, Chinese-Canadians and Alberta's first German-born and Moslem cabinet ministers. Yet there was always a sense of conformism. Blacks, immigrants and non-Christians were in the club because they were all Conservatives first. On May 8, Albertans elected 61 Conservatives, 16 New Democrats, four Liberals and two Representatives. Perspectives have changed. Things are said and done now “The macho male is out,” the married father of two said during his first speech in the ily. “We are the renewing fresh sources of the feminine, for after all, the word uterus in Hebrew is the same as the word for compassion. It started with the appointment of a 33-year-old female labor activist, Pam Barrett (NDP Edmonton Highlands) as NDP Leader Ray Martin's second-incommand in the legislature. No woman has been closer to political leadership here. The first private member's bill this session came from another woman, Christie Mjolsness (NDP-Edmonton Calder). It would set new standards for operation of day care centres. ‘The change goes deepers than party policy or what is raised in question period. In mid-June, Leo Piquette (NDP-Athabasca-Lac La Biche) stood in the legislature and said he would speak in French. LAWS Piquette, whose central Alberta riding includes a number of francophones and Metis, quoted old laws and said he believed he was “the first French-English member whose riding on their wisdom and sense of adventure in voting for him. “What can you say about electors who choose a Jewish civil libertarian bachelor with a beard and fluffy hair... who represents a party which in the past was viewed very much in the same way as the Boston strangler was viewed in Massachusetts?” Chumir said. which were not before. IMAGES SHAKEN Stereotypes of Albertans have been shaken by rookie members like William Roberts, the Harvard-educated Anglican priest who now represents Edmonton Centre for the NDP. (CP) The Provincial Consumer and Corporate Affairs Ministry is considering letting night clubs and bars open Sundays on a permanent basis. A regulation allowing the facilities to open Sundays was originally expected to last until the Expo 86 world’s fair ends in October. However, Allan Gould, eneral manager of liquor cdgtrol and licencing in B.C., sal there is no termination fause in the order and the government is thinking of letting it stand indefinitely Gould said the order could remain in effect because of a favorable response from the public and the private sector but a final decision will have to come from the provincial cabinet.
