room revealed shelf after
shelf of pickled beets, pep-
pers, beans, tomato juice,
jams and jellies.

But Steve Mandula’s
sauerkraut is the piece de
resistance so far as his family
is concerned.

All four children grew up
on Anne Mandula’s “medicine
soup,” which they devoured
eagerly after over-indulging
in sweets and rich foods. The
soup is made from sauer-
kraut and got its name be-
cause of its soothing prop-
