Water system replaced The Covert Irrigation Dis- trict near Grand Forks has received $153,500 under the federal-provinéial agriculture agreement to rebuild an in- adequate irrigation and do- mestic water system. Joint 50-50 funding for the project was announced by federal Agriculture Minister John Wise and B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries John Savage. The funds are provided under ARDSA, the Agri-Food Regional Develop- ment Subsidiary Agreement. “The improvements will remove the water shortage constraints in the area to’ allow for ‘production of higher-value crops and en-» sure that there are supplies of drinkable water,” said Wise. Savage noted that the im- provements involve con- struction of a new reservoir and its connections, as well as rebuilding of the existing pump and _ distribution system. “Quality as well as quant- ity of water will be assured and the project will benefit the entire community.” The $215,000 project, being implemented by the district, should be completed by March. Under the $40-million ARDSA program imple mented in 1985, Agriculture Canada and the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries each contribute $40 million over five years to fund pro- jects that enhance B.C. agri culture.
