Horacio Ariza worked the graveyard shift at a Santa Ana ser- vice station within walking dis- tance of his home. A high school graduate, Horacio,. also worked rt-time at a dry estab- aware of the risks involved i in working in a high crime,area after in order to enough money to attend a junior college in Santa Ana. He intended to pursue a career as a civil ser- vant. On Oct. 19, 1984 in the wee hours of the morning, someone walked into the gas station, shoved a handgun in Horacio's face and demanded the money from the cash register. Psychiatrists testified that in their opinion Medina was faking insanity in order to avoid the death penalty.
