Bird Cownt Successful The West Kootenay Natu- ralists are concerned about the seed-eaters such as Goldfinch, Common Redpoll and Pine Siskin. The spring and summer of 1976 was a very wet year. This may have had an effect on the nesting, hatching and feed- ing of these species. The wet weather may have also had an effect on .the full development of the seeds need- ed for the winter survival of these birds. The West Kootenay Natu- ralists would also like to thank all participants that gave of their time to make this year’s bird count such a success. Mel DeAnna Editor, Castlegar i On behalf of t Kootenay Na would like to take th tunity to thank the News for its help in ci birds—an increase of 2,368 from the 1976 count. Voice of the People They’re God's Creatures Editor, Castlegar News: May I once again remind Glenmerry - NEW AND USED FURNITURE 3191 Highway Drive: PHONE 364-1822 your number of faithful readers that with the renewed onset of cold weather, “God's creatures” (the birds)— to quote my elderly Doukhobor friend, will be in need of some assistance in order to survive, First of all, birds must have water and right now it is frozen and difficult to get at, so a pan of water placed near the feeding area gets considerable use. (I have found that one pint of water goes in about two hours.) Since there is a consider- able variety of wintering birds. . there is a considerable choice in the kinds of food that can be placed out for them. Kitchen scraps, including leftover fruit, fat trimmings, bread (prefer- ably dried and mixed with any kind of fatty material), stale cake and pastry, rolléd oats or oatmeal, nuts (shelled or un- shelled) and even bones with scraps attached to them will provide nourishment for some needy bird. . Commercial wild birdseed mixes are available at local grocery stores and feed stores, unsalted sunflower seeds are a -prest..drawing card for the Evening Grosheaks and Stel- lar’s Jays and can be bought at astore in the centre of town in wholesale lots, while cheap ” hamburger or fat scraps from the butcher, cut up or hung ‘irotta branct: protidss 2 stugin.. of high energy food. Many birds will not eat on the ground so that it is necessary to place the food and water in an elevated place, where you can also watch them better. In any case, there are very few pursuits which give so much pleasure at so little cost of effort and money than that of feeding the wintering birds. It is not the cold that kills, it is*the hunger and indif- ference, J.A. Charters Castlegar The building was located at 3077 Waldie Lane in Robson. The fire is still under investi- gation. In-depth Review Into College Operation Selkirk College is about to begin an in-depth review of its entire operation,, the first since it was established eleven years ago. Municipalities rect million in uncondition: during the current fis which ends March 31, said. British Columbia's 140 municipalities will share $106 million in unconditional grants in the next fiscal year under the province’s Revenue Sharing Act, Municipal Affairs Minister Hugh Curtis said last week. This is a 12.8 per cent overall average increase, he said. Curtis said this uncondi- tional grant does not include the $30,000 basic grant each municipalily will get, or condi- tional grants for special pro- jects such as sewers and water. He said grants would total $140 million for the year starting April 1, resulting in lower taxes for the smaller municipalities and villages. Curtis said that larger municipalities College council was told at its recent meeting that Selkirk ‘will thoroughly audit its opera- tion using a model similar to a review conducted by Camosun College last yeat.
